Projects and Components:
Samahang Pilipino Education and Retention (SPEAR)
Since 1989, the Pilipino Community on campus has made an effort to address the retention issues of all students on campus. A result of this effort is the Samahang Pilipino Education and Retention (SPEAR) project-a student-run project created by Pilipino students for all students to utilize. SPEAR offers many services to combat the array of challenges preventing Pilipino students, as well as others, from graduating.
Samahang Pilipino Advancing Community Empowerment (SPACE)
Since 2000, the student-initiated access project SPACE has been serving the youth at Belmont, Eagle Rock, and Marshall high schools in Los Angeles through tutoring, peer advising, workshops, conferences, and field trips. The SPACE project works to strengthen the inner spirit of each student so that they can be active agents in the transformation of themselves and their community.
Samahang Pilipino Cultural Night (SPCN):1st time Samahang Pilipino Theme Song sung in SPCN for the Manongs in 1982.
Samahang Pilipino Culture Night (SPCN) is a year-long process dedicated to creating awareness, spurring dialogue, and taking action on issues pertinent to the Pilipino community. With a cast of over 200 participants and an audience of up to 3,600 individuals, SPCN serves as an important opportunity to celebrate and share Pilipino culture with friends, family, and fellow students. The 30th Annual Samahang Pilipino Cultural Night will be held on May 19, 2007 in Royce Hall.
Samahang Teaching through Experience Program (STEP)
Samahang Pilipino's internship program is for individuals who are interested
in learning about the organization's history and inner workings. STEP interns
are given the unique opportunity to shadow Samahang Pilipino Board members,
participate in program planning, and develop valuable leadership skills.
Pinays Component
Established in the early 90s Pinays was formed to help create and establish
a support network for Samahang Pilipino womyn, and Pinays on campus in general.Over
the years, Pinays has put on several programs and events supporting womyn and
the Pilipino community, including poetry readings, educational workshops, and
discussion groups. Recognizing the limited spaces available for Pinays on campus,
Pinays looks to promote an open, safe space for PINAYS on campus, a place in
which womyn can come together, share experiences, stories and issues.
Kabalikat (translation, "shoulder to shoulder") - Gender
& Sexuality Component
Established in 1995, Samahang Pilipino was the FIRST collegiate Pilipino
student organization to advocate on behalf of its queer brothers and sisters.
With the creation of the Queer Pin@y Conferences, Samahang Pilipino's Kabalikat
is focused on creating a safe space for queer Pin@ys to find a family in SP
and in UCLA and to make social change. Kabalikat also strives to educate issues
on Gender and Sexuality as well as creating allies in coalition with other organizations
and communities at UCLA and beyond.
Sayaw Ng Silangan (Dance of the East)
Sayaw Ng Silangan is Samahang Pilipino's official performing arts troupe.
Sayaw strives to accurately portray the diverse subcultures and the performance
styles of the Philippines.
Samahang Modern
Samahang Modern explores a variety of different dance forms, with its focus
lying in the development, interpretation, and performance of the many dimensions
of Hip Hop.
