DJ Furious Styles
Imagine dedicating your life to helping other people shine. Not common in an era where everyone wants to shine. But for DJ Furious Styles, he only wants unsigned artists to be recognized for the music he sheds a light on.
His commitment becomes more apparent after learning that he named his mixtape series and radio show on XM Satellite radio “Shine.†“The name is befitting because I wanted something simple and catchy,†explains the noble DJ. “Shine was the first name that came to mind. It’s simple and everyone raps about getting their shine on.â€
DJ Furious styles have had his share of the spotlight. Touching turntables since age 10, he went on to DJ at his college’s radio show at American University, and afterward worked in commercial radio. During his stint at commercial radio, he DJ’d for stars such as Usher, Kanye West, Guerrilla Black, Nina Skyy, Usher, Wyclef, NERD, 50 cent and Eminem.
Bothered by the politics engulfing commercial radio, Furious Styles switched over to Satellite radio and the rest is history. Now exposing the hottest unsigned national talent every Thursday on XM 66 Raw, the one hour show is the largest independent/unsigned artists’ radio show in the country. “I’m happy that I’ve tapped into this market and have helped artists get recognized. It’s a good look for everyone,†says Furious Styles who does all the programming for Shine. “Anyone featured on my show can compete with the heavyweights. That’s the thing about the show, they all deserve deals. Shine gives you a variety of talent opposed to commercial radio by twin folds.â€
With the show taking life less than a year ago, Shine has helped discover many artists from Atlanta to New York to Los Angeles to Chicago. Moving at an exponential rate, the show is listened to by A&R’s at major record labels, and reaches anywhere Satellite radio can be heard. XM radio’s 8 million subscribers, partnership with Direct TV and AOL, increases the chances for unsigned artists to be heard. “I hope to keep breaking new acts and to eventually have the future of hip-hop flowing through the channel of Shine,†declares Furious Styles. “Without XM 66 Raw’s music director MZ Kitti and program director LEO G, none of this would be possible and they have a strong commitment to breaking these artists as well.â€
The Shine Mixtape series compliments the show and DJ Furious Styles’ movement to break unsigned artists. Working alongside his partner DJ DUB to get the mixtape out quarterly, it features roughly 30 unsigned artists and is delivered to all the major record companies.
Aspiring to fill the shoes of an A&R at a paramount record label in the future, DJ Furious Styles says, “By being well-traveled and well-involved in a lot of situations in life, I can identify with anyone. That’s helped me develop a keen ear for good music. Hip-hop is full of good music and whatever real hip-hop is to you, support it!â€
