About Me
In many ways, MARVO aka MARVELOUS is the ideal Hip-Hop/Rap Male Solo Artist, loved by the Mid-West, the Dirty South, the East and the West Coasts. This 20-year-old rap phenomenon’s undeniable style, confident swagger and realism, epitomize the streets of Chicago. It is rare for a hardcore rapper to transcend the line between Hip-Hop and Rap, winning respect from hustlers and backpackers alike. There is substance behind his style, which is why he is loved by the streets, as well as the critics. His music explores the paradox of good and evil. Whether proclaiming himself “MARVO,†“MARVELOUS,†“VO†or “M-ELEVEN†(for his rapid fire flow!), his rhymes celebrate surviving the street life, the risks of hustling for cash, inevitable violent encounters, the temptation to deal drugs, mandatory boasting, the frustrations of struggling everyday just to survive, but still manages to convey his beliefs and values. He provides an introspective approach to the over-exploited “gangsta†theme, explaining the hood, instead of just exploiting it.
He overcame considerable obstacles during his extremely dramatic life, before exploding on to the scene with masterful delivery, unmatched lyricism and street savvy! Born, Ralph Metcalf, son of an ex-drug-dealer and raised by his young single black mother and her well known gangster “live-in†boyfriend, MARVO was unable to resist the lure of fast money, so he traded classrooms for the rough streets of Harvey World, an extension of the Wild 100’s area of Chicago. He spent most of his days soaking up the street ideology, stories and the life lessons of the drug dealers, killers and high-ranking members of organized crime characterized in his rhymes. One hot summer night an event occurred that would change MARVO’s life forever. After just barely escaping the bullets of a rival gang, still full of adrenaline, MARVO was accidentally shot by a member of his own crew. Less than a year later, MARVO awoke one morning to an empty house. His mother, his siblings, the furniture and all their belonging were gone. Like an eagle drops it’s young from the nest to either fly or perish, his mother packed up and moved while he slept, abandoning him and leaving a teenage MARVO to fend for his self. Shortly thereafter, MARVO’s star potential began to steer him away from the hood and into the studio.
MARVO has a very big buzz in Chicago right now! Shawnna's -"Damn" (Remix) featuring MARVO and 12 other exclusives and original songs have been in heavy rotation on WPWX Power 92 and 107.5 WGCI mix shows in Chicago for over a year now! He is getting major spins on XM Radio 66 RAW “Shine.†MARVO was featured on the 2007 VIBE/BET Hoops & Hip-Hop Tour (10 cities) with Fabolous, Lloyd, Monica & Cheri Dennis.
MARVO has teamed up with Multi-Platinum producer Buckwild (50 Cent, Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G, The Game, etc.), Platinum producer Jamahl Rashid (Jay-Z, Diddy, Missy Elliott, Monica, etc.), SC (Game, Diddy, Mobb Deep) Herb Brasko (P.Diddy, Young Dro), Mush Millions (Terror Squad) and Kosine (Kanye West) to work on his debut album.
Although he experimented with street hustling and gang life, MARVO has earned his respect and street credibility by developing the gift of storytelling, crafting his own style, delivering hard-hitting urban commentary with street savvy beyond his years. His gritty narratives and cinematic rhymes about the violent life of organized crime communicate the dark side of Chicago made famous by Al Capone, Sam Giancana, Jeff Fort and Larry Hoover. The untold story of America’s “Second City,†Chicago and the chronicles of a young man struggling to survive with his “Back Against The Wall.â€
