Gumbo Phil was born in Crowley, Louisiana, Home of the Legendary Jay Miller Excello sessions. As a young boy going to school, he couldn't wait for Saturdays, so he could go hang out at Jay Miller's record store and recording studio. There he developed a love for the music of South Louisiana and got to meet most of the cats making it. In the 5th Grade, he was fronting his first band. The first song they learned was "Judy In Disguise" by Baton Rouge star, John Fred. After high school and a stint in the Army, he formed The Fantastic TileShakerz with a young guitar whiz known as "Little Ray" YBarra. They played all over South Louisiana for years. The band split after the death of close friend and bassist Terry Buller. The band regrouped as Little Ray and the Blues Sonics. Gumbo Phil spent many years as frontman for the popular South Louisiana/East Texas-based group. Gumbo Phil recorded two CDs with the band, "Hot Rod Blues" and "Going Back To Eunice", both recorded for the Great Blues Recording label. After years of touring, Gumbo Phil retired from the road to spend more time with his son. Gumbo Phil was also a freelance writer who contributed to Blues Social and Blues Access magazines. He served on the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame as Associate Director. After years of dedicated service, Gumbo Phil was inducted into the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame in 2003 by Louisiana Governor Mike Foster and Hall of Fame Director Gary Daigle. Semi-retired from the road, Gumbo Phil still manages to appear every now and then with his partner in the blues, "Little Ray" Y'barra and the Blues Sonics. Gumbo Phil is currently a radio DJ for the ever so popular, critically acclaimed radio station "Louisiana Proud" KBON 101.1FM broadcasting worldwide at www.kbon.com.
