HOT TAMALE BRASS BAND

A TASTE OF NEW ORLEANS RIGHT IN YOUR OWN BACK YARD

About Me

God bless Thorny Penfield. My old buddy from New Orleans passed away August 21st 2007.
He was a Quaker and a mover. He did me some big favors when I moved to New Orleans. He got me in my first working band in NOLA before I even arrived and put me up in his home while I was still living out of my moving van. He was a good hearted guy.
The Hot Tamale Brass Band is a New Orleans style brass band formed in 1992 by Mickey Bones after moving from New Orleans, Louisiana to Boston MA..
Bones had played in a Brass Band, while living in the Big Easy, called the Gentilly Brass Band. That band played a lot of neighborhood block parties, Mardi Gras and Lundi Gras Balls, Coronations for Krewe Kings and Queens and parades including the Krewe of Bacchus parade , which is the second largest in the city. The Hot Tamales started rehearsals in Mickey's old Central Square apartment in Cambridge Massachusetts. His girlfriend worked at Redbones BBQ and brought home lots of food. Every Sunday Mickey would take all the meat and make a huge soup, feed and supply the band with a case of beer to entice them into coming to rehearsals. After six months he got them their first gig working for the Sam Adams Brewery, who paid them in cash and as much beer as they could fit into six cars, which kept the rehearsals going for a few more months. The past fourteen years they have kept very busy playing the East Coast from Maine to Pennsylvania playing their supercharged brand of New Orleans jazz and funky second line brass band music.

Band Members: An Authentic sounding New Orleans brass band from Boston Ma..
We play traditional New Orleans jazz and funky second line brass band music.
The Hot Tamale Brass Band makes you feel like you're down in the Big Easy,
during a Mardi Gras Parade. With trumpet, trombone, sax, sousaphone and
two drummers. We are professionals with the real funky feel of Bourbon Street.
We dress in a few different themes, a traditional New Orleans look of white shirt,
black pants, and black shoes; maybe you prefer casual tee shirts with the
Hot Tamale logo, or, matching costumes for; Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's day,
Halloween, Red Sox baseball players, pirates, Holiday Santa, and many more.
We travel all over New England turning your party into a "Bourbon Street North".

Influences:
We are totally inspired by the Rebirh Brass Band, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Treme Brass Band and others.
Back in the eighties before Mickey Bones lived in New Orleans, he would visit for a week or two and go to places like the Glass House and the Petroleum Lounge to hear Rebirth and Treme before they were a big deal nationally

Some of our influences are;
Bix Biederbeck, Jack Teagarden, , Kid Thomas, Kid Ory, King Oliver, Baby Dodds, Tuba Fats, Louis Armstrong's Hot 5, Hot 7, Dirty Dozen, Treme, Rebirth, Kermit Ruffin, The Little Rascals Brass Band, Olympia, Hot 8, Soul Rebels, The Original Dixieland Jass Band, the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and the Keystone Kops
We hope you appreciate us as a very good band, but please don't forget to check out the source of our inspiration for the music that we play. A lot comes from them.
