About Me

In a nutshell, if you are a New Yorker, we defend your civil rights, and we have been doing so since 1951.
And yes, we are affiliated with the ACLU, they are our papa/mama.
Enough said.
Not enough said?
Well then, since you are so inclined to read this far, you may want to hear more about us, our history and nonesuch, so go ahead, visit us at www.nyclu.org.
Here is a tease of what you might find:
"Our mission is to defend and promote the fundamental principles and values embodied in the Bill of Rights, the U.S. Constitution, and the New York Constitution, including freedom of speech and religion, and the right to privacy, equality and due process of law for all New Yorkers."
Blah, blah, blah and etc.
Leave that to the courts.
But, for here, for the right now, let’s do some facebook socializing! Poke, poke.
Civil libertarians need to party too.
For the seriously-bent, to get more information, go to www.nyclu.org, or email [email protected].
For volunteer meetings & events, go to: http://nyclu.org/about/events
Otherwise, take it to the wall!
why?
"because liberty is a lifestyle"

My Interests

RECENT VICTORY:
Did you hear about our recent victory in our Martinez case? The one about gay marriage?! Here's a clip from our press release: "In a unanimous decision, a New York appellate court today ruled that marriages of same-sex couples entered into outside of New York must be recognized in this state."
Incredible! For more information view the decision at: http://www.nyclu.org/files/martinez_decision_020108.pdf
ONGOING EVENTS
Free Food! And Discussion. Every first Tuesday of the month. Formally called: The NYCLU Civil Liberties Discussion Series. Note: Please include the "The" whenever speaking of the Discussion Series. The next The NYCLU Civil Liberties Discussion Series event will be on the first Tuesday of the month. Easy to remember, right?! The topics vary, but always about civil liberties, and we will announce what it is ASAP. But know, that it will be fierce. Illuminaries talk, you eat, and we all discuss at the end. Fierce. Just like our last one which was on fierce ssues in NYS. You missed it. Don't let it happen again.
ALSO:
Check out our events tab over here to the right of the screen. It is a great way to learn about the work we do, the hot civil liberties issues of the day, meet new people and who knows, maybe meet that civic-minded special someone you have been dreaming of since like forever. Or, end up on one of our YouTube videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/nycluclips
WE GOT ISSUES:Police In Schools
Surveillance
Juvenile Detention Centers
Marriage Fairness
Public Defense Reform
REAL ID
Police Stop & Frisk Policies
Reproductive Rights
WHAT ARE WE DOING ON MYSPACE:
This is a place for all of us to congregate and make a ruckus, myspace style. Have fun, be serious, spread words, educate each other, create community forums, post videos, post discussions, organize... And all else, it would seem.
EXPECT:
Postings of articles that have civil liberties issues, our press releases as they are released, entertaining and informative videos on issues of the day, invitations to events, and a large dose of fierceness overall, from the content to the people. We hope you enjoy.
