Close Guantánamo, Stop Torture & Abuse, End Indefinite Detention

About Me

January 11, 2008 marked the six-year anniversary of the first arrival of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay. For over six years, Guantanamo Bay has tarnished America’s image and diminished our ideals. It is a symbol of torture, abuse, and injustice. Its closure is long overdue.
FACT: Approximately 775 men and boys have been detaineed at Guantánamo Bay.
FACT: Over 475 of these men (who the administration labeled "the worst of the worst") have been released without charge.
FACT: No trial has been completed and only one man, David Hicks, has pled guilty. He is now a free man living in Australia.
FACT: The oldest know prisoner at Guantánamo Bay was 98 years-old.
FACT: The youngest was just 13.
FACT: Only 5 percent of prisoners at Guantánamo were actually captured by U.S. forces.
FACT: Over 55 percent have been determined "not to have committed any hostile acts against the United States or its allies."
The United States is based on the rule of law. The right to a fair trial is at the core of our democracy. We cannot hold these men arbitrarily, without charge, any longer. They must be brought to trial, in the U.S. court system or in a military tribunal proceeding, or released to a country where they will not be tortured.
The ACLU is calling on people of conscience everywhere to wear an orange ribbon to symbolize their disgust with the shame that is Guantánamo Bay and to demand that the U.S. government close Guantánamo!
