Duncan Patterson myspace.com/duncan patterson is doing a sponsored walk to
raise money for a childrens hospital in Liverpool. Please donate what

All the best!
Duncan writes: "I will be walking the 'Camino Portugués' in April/May 2008. The ancient pilgrimage route goes from Portugal to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, with a distance of around 240 kilometres. I hope to do this in around 12/14 days. I was first inspired to do the walk for personal reasons, then I saw this as a perfect opportunity to raise money for the Imagine appeal – the charity of the Alder Hey specialist children’s hospital in Liverpool.
So please sponsor me now!"

Physicians for Social Responsibility PSR.org Oppose Military Escalation in Iraq Advocates of a call for additional troops argue that a short term surge in troop levels will enable the U.S. to gain control of the violence, proceed with training Iraqis in security tactics, and ultimately facilitate a withdrawal of U.S. troops. This rationale is the same argument offered and accepted last summer when 70,000 U.S. and Iraqi forces moved into Baghdad in an effort to use military force to secure the streets. As part of the military effort last summer, the U.S. sent 14,000 additional troops to Iraq, bringing the total number of U.S. soldiers up to the current level of 140,000. Yet the additional troops did not stabilize the city. The Pentagon’s own statistics from that period .. how weekly attacks increased by 15 percent while the number of Iraqi civilian casualties increased by 51 percent over the previous month. A November 2006 Department of Defense (DoD) report, “Measuring Stability and Security in Iraq,†reported a 22% rise in violence from August to November 2006. Year end statistics show that across the country as a whole, Iraqi casualties surged by 300% in the second half of 2006 as a result of the continuing occupation and the insurgency it spawns. Sending more troops didn’t work last summer and it won’t work today. The U.S.-led occupation has been a medical and public health disaster for the Iraqi people. Estimates of the number of Iraqi deaths caused by the war since 2003 range (according to methodology used) from 45,000 (Iraq Body Count) to 600,000 or more (Survey published in The Lancet in October 2006)) Iraqi civilians. The growth of torture and murder by death squads, as well as torture and prisoner abuse by U.S. forces is well ..ed. The military conflict since 2003 has resulted in the extensive destruction of Iraqi society and health-supporting infrastructure, as well as widespread environmental damage and contamination, including destruction of vital environmental health services, such as water-delivery and waste water treatment, and pollution of the environment including the still unaccounted for dispersal of depleted uranium (DU) in many populated areas of Iraq. The situation has also placed an enormous strain on U.S. military personnel and their families, with many forced to serve multiple, long tours of duty in Iraq a situation that will only get worse if the “surge†in troop numbers is implemented. Over 3,000 U.S. and allied soldiers (6), as well as hundreds of individuals forces serving as private contractors have been killed. Overall, the conflict has resulted in over 21,000 U.S. and allied forces being wounded in action, with many very serious and disabling injuries, requiring costly rehabilitation services, particularly for the estimated 20 percent of the wounded with brain and spinal injuries. A comprehensive Pentagon study published in March 2006 revealed that more than one in three soldiers and Marines who served in Iraq later sought help for mental health and/or behavioral disorders and, U.S. veterans of the military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have faced significant problems including family adjustments, unemployment, and post-traumatic stress. This dreadful human toll has come as the cost of an invasion and occupation which has completely failed in its objectives. President Bush promised to make us safe from Weapons of Mass Destruction that the United Nations had dismantled through proper disarmament procedures, and promised to bring peace and democracy to Iraq. Instead he has brought death and chaos. Sending more troops to Iraq is not a new strategy, it is a dangerous repetition of a strategy that has failed. This is ‘stay the course plus’, with no vision for a long term solution to violence that is bringing disaster to the people of Iraq. There is no military solution to end the violence in Iraq. Only a political solution will offer an opportunity for Iraq to make the transition from violent chaos to a stable and sovereign nation and allow the U.S to withdraw. For a political solution to occur the U.S. must support diplomatic efforts to end the violence. PSR advocates a number of policies that could help improve the situation in Iraq and deal with the human consequences of this disastrous war: Immediately initiate the safe withdrawal of U.S. armed forces from Iraq, accompanied by selected deployment of replacement international peacekeeping troops under the command of the United Nations in areas of potential significant risk for inter ethnic conflict or civil war;Halt plans to establish “enduring†U.S. military bases in Iraq;Support a United Nations led process to oversee continued efforts to develop an Iraqi constitution that respects the rights and interests of all domestic ethnic and political groupings, generally based on established UN principles of international human and economic rights;Abide by international standards of human rights, the Geneva Conventions, and the U.S. Constitution, by immediately and unequivocally ending such practices as the imprisonment of persons arbitrarily defined as “enemy combatants†without access to lawyers, habeas corpus petitions or judicial review; to end the use of torture, including the outsourcing of torture by so called “rendition†of prisoners to other nations known for their systematic employment of such abuses in interrogation and the establishment of secret prisons;Guarantee the security of, and priority for, the reconstruction of vital health-supporting infrastructure in Iraq and to ensure safe access to this infrastructure by the Iraqi people;Guarantee that adequate resources are provided for the care and rehabilitation of physically and psychologically injured U.S. military personnel and their families;Provide needed funds, in coordination with NATO nations and regional Mideast allies, for aforementioned reconstruction and security assistance, to be disbursed by UN agencies and Iraqi acceptable NGOs;Immediately allow agencies such as the United Nations Environmental Program to begin to characterize the extent of all environmental contamination in Iraq caused by the military conflict, and to adequately fund efforts to protect Iraqi civilians and all soldiers involved in the conflict from the consequences of any established or potential environmental exposures.TAKE ACTION PSR Oppose_Escalation_in_Iraq PSR.orgPlease also support General Wesley Clark and Iraq veterans who have also mounted a petition against war with Iran, just announced today at:Go To http://www.StopIranWar.comGeneral Wesley Clark helped them launch their effort with these words:War with Iran is not the answer now. We must work with our allies, talk with Iran, and use all diplomatic, political, and economic options at our disposal. Military force in Iran is not the solution.PSR Resolutions Resolution on Iran Whereas Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) believes that the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a grave danger to global security; Whereas PSR was founded to campaign for the prevention of nuclear war and the elimination of nuclear weapons; Whereas Iran has been found by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in breach of its obligations under Articles I and II of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT); PSR resolves: That it is unacceptable for Iran to flout its NPT obligations in the search for nuclear weapons capability; And therefore, To promote a diplomatic solution to prevent the acquisitions of nuclear weapons or nuclear capability by Iran ; To campaign to prevent a military attack by the United State (US) and its allies against Iran at this time in the name of Counterproliferation; Therefore, PSR urges: The United States, the European Union and other parties to negotiations with Iran, to fully engage in negotiations that can answer the security, economic and political needs of Iran and other states in the region to achieve a lasting settlement to the current crisis; All States parties to the NPT, and other states in the region, to work for the urgent implementation of the Resolution on a Nuclear and other Weapons of Mass Destruction-Free Zone in the Middle East agreed as part of the indefinite extension of the NPT in 1995 Support PSR Become an Activist PSR.org
