About Me

I'm a writer living in Manhattan. I moved to New York in the summer of 1993 and immediately started freelancing. I've written for the New York Post, Time Out New York, NY Press, Manhattan Spirit, Gadfly magazine, Nerve (the magazine that Legs McNeil edited, not that online thing), New York Newsday and Manhattan Mirror among others.
From 1993 to 2001 I was the editor, publisher and primary writer for a magazine called fishwrap. It was a magazine, that I liked to refer to as, a publication that bit the hands that wouldn't feed me. I started publishing the magazine after interviewing and then being rejected for a staff writing position at People, Entertainment Weekly and In Style. After sending out portfolios and feelers to other mainstream magazines and getting no response I decided since they wouldn't hire me, I would create a magazine that ridiculed their magazines, editors and writers. I often likened the magazine to a little kid throwing a tantrum. While the magazine was a critical and cult success, with positive reviews of the magazine written up in The New York Post, NY Daily News, Spin magazine, Men's Journal, Sassy, and USA Today, among others, I never made money due to the fact that I was rotten at selling advertising and I'm a horrible businessman. I folded the magazine in 2001. Four copies of fishwrap are posted below for your viewing pleasure.
In 2002 I wrote a book called, 99 Beers Off The Wall--A Crazed Guide and Twisted Travelogue of One Man's Journey to 99 Bars in New York City in Seven Days. The book was a satire of the Zagat's guide book and I visited and reviewed 99 bars and drank 99 beers in seven days off from my night job. ABC overnight news filmed a segment for the book, but it never got aired, due to lots of "real news" that summer. Oh well. Copies are still available.
