Sparks and Shadows

About Me

Hello, and thanks for visiting! I write nonfiction, humor, poetry, and fiction.

My fiction goes all over the road, although I do tend to write genre stories (science fiction, fantasy, horror, etc.) more often than straightforward mainstream fiction.

You can find my work in:

I'm pretty geeked to be in a book with Ray Bradbury and Clive Barker.

And I write humorous science fiction; here are a few pieces you might have seen:
Installing Linux on a Dead Badger: User's Notes
Your Corporate Network and the Forces of Darkness
Faery Cats: The Cutest Killers
A Preference For Silence
I tend to post to my LiveJournal more often than I post here: http://las.livejournal.com/ .

I write a quarterly column for Horror World on science and technology for writers. My writing has appeared in publications such as Chiaroscuro, The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy, Full Unit Hookup, Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet, SF Site, Strange Horizons, and Writer Online. If you want to know more, please visit my bibliography .

I sometimes get asked why I write what I write, and the answer is really pretty simple: because that's what interests me.

I'm a graduate of the Clarion workshop and I'm co-moderator of Writeshop . I'm also one of the admins at Everything2 .

For about 7 years, I published Dark Planet; I also served as an editor for the prozines Strange Horizons and HMS Beagle.

And, last but not least, I'm married to the smart, talented, and devastatingly sexy author Gary A. Braunbeck . If you enjoy thrillers, mysteries, and intelligent horror novels, check out his site.

Everyone is welcome here!

Music:

My musical tastes go all over the road. Bjork, She Wants Revenge, The Hives, The White Stripes, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Creatures, The Cruxshadows, Apocalyptica, The Baltimore Consort, Christopher Parkening, Clint Mansell, Concrete Blonde, Curve, Dave Brubeck, Dead Can Dance, Faith and The Muse, Garmarna, Juno Reactor, Howard Shore, and many others

Movies:

Murder By Decree, Aliens, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Blade Runner, The Company of Wolves, The Ring, The Matrix, Black Hawk Down, Spy Game, The Lord of the Rings, The Incredibles, Toy Story, Monsters Inc., North by Northwest, Silence of the Lambs, The Limey, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Shaun of the Dead, Crash, A History of Violence, Dark City

Television:

I don't actually watch that much TV; shows I like tend to get cancelled. Invader Zim, Dead Like Me, Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, Firefly, Twilight Zone, Futurama, Family Guy, Doctor Who

Books:

Midnight Robber, American Gods, Brown Girl in the Ring, Keepers, In Silent Graves, In the Midnight Museum, The Left Hand of Darkness, Weaveworld, Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, Like Death, American Gods, Last Call, Earthquake Weather, The Anubis Gates, Skin Folk, Sandman, Coraline, Earthquake Weather, Alien Taste, The Drawing of the Dark, Good Omens, Things Left Behind, The Indifference of Heaven, The Princess Bride, Tainted Trail, Dinner at Deviant's Palace, Fight Club, Haunted, On Stranger Tides, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Salt Roads, Midnight Robber ... a (very) few of my favorite writers are Nalo Hopkinson, Kelly Link, Tim Powers, Ursula K. Le Guin, Neil Gaiman, Philip K. Dick, Douglas Adams, Maureen McHugh, and of course Gary A. Braunbeck.

Heroes:

Liviu Librescu and everyone fighting the good fight. Outside the pages of a book or the frames of a movie, human beings are too flawed, fragile, and mortal to last long in the hero business. Which is probably a big part of why I enjoy books and movies so much.
