THE CAT WITHIN ----SINGING THE MUSIC OF JOHN SCOFIELD
The instrumental music of jazz guitar legend John Scofield has been given an inspired lyrical treatment on a new album 'The cat within', recorded by Australian vocalist/musician/composer Daryl Aberhart.

This landmark recording is the first time the Scofields have ever given their' blessing to such a project, and after listening to the title track 'the cat within', it's easy to hear why; this album is a pure and positive affirmation.

Scofield's original melodies and harmonies are shown total respect throughout 'the cat within', and Aberhart's savvy lyrical treatment and arrangements give this album a broad based accessability that allows this album to function on a wide variety of levels.

Track selections have been taken from classic Scofield albums as 'Time on my hands' , 'Groove Elation', 'Hand Jive' and 'Bump' , giving a tasty overview of John's recorded work between 1990-1999.

The relaxed joy of the ensemble playing on 'the cat within' disguises some serious capability on behalf of the musicians. Daryl's intonation, tone and phrasing impart even more life into already breath taking melodies, which are taken uptown via sharp backing vocal arrangements, beautifully realised by highly respected Sydney based vocalist Lily Dior.

Jazz purists and Scofield fans are well accomodated as featured instrumentalists Gary Daley (organ/rhodes), Dave Longo (guitar) and Richard Maegraith (saxophone) stroll up and down Scofield's spiky harmonic ladders with ease and style. The rhythm section of drummer Nic Cecire and bassist Brett Hirst sew deep pockets ,laying down sassy grooves, whilst maintaining the fresh taste and integrity of the original tracks.

The cat within is truly an ensemble effort, with the jazz muscle more sinew than bulk, obtained more by chopping wood than clocking overtime at the gym. The focus becomes the vocalisation of the feeling translated by Scofield's music as a whole, and it feels great!.

The Cat Within was recorded and mixed by Michael Henshaw at Paradise and was mastered by Steve Smart at Studio 301

Vasja Ivanovski 94.1 FM RADIO 2 This CD is just amazing! To set an instrumental music of complexity such as John Scofield's material and put vocals on, is worth every commendation! Although a bit sceptic before listening, I admit, this works exceptionally well. Daryl has made a CD that deserves as much exposure as possible. Every cut is a winner and I can imagine Mr. Scofield smiling happy as his music steps up into another dimension! Excellent stuff!

Pascal Dorban Radio ARA , Luxembourg This is a very interesting album, something you do not hear everyday. To have the idea of singing Scofield's music is one thing , and not an easy one. DarylAberhardt managed to complete the task very well. He is helped by great musicians all the way. Great Australian jazz indeed. I will feature one of the tunes in one of my forthcoming broadcasts, next to a Scofield tune, which goes without saying. Pascal Dorban Jazz.com broadcast Radio ARA, Luxembourg

Uwe Golz Deutschlandradio Kultur nothing more to say, than - a superb interpretation, we all loved it, was presented as well as in Tonart (link) also in Radiofeuilleton.

Michael Criddle Triple H-FM What a great sound you have, I have played several of your tracks to date and plan to schedule more in future programs. Keep up the good work and please keep me up to date with your progress Regards Michael Criddle

Barry O..'Sullivan BLU FM 89.1 This is a suberb album which raises the already high benchmark of jazz recordings we have in this country to new levels. Fabulous musicianship from Gary Daley, Brett Hirst and Dave Longo, and brilliantly executed lyrics and vocals from Daryl Aberhart make this a must have recording for the jazz buff. Not to mention the wonderful music of John Scofield!! I have already played a favourite track ,Remember Me, on my national radio program A Jazz Hour which goes out weekly to 140 stations across Australia via the CBAA network and will continue to select tracks from time to time for my playlist. Thanks Daryl for a unique unparalled compilation of artisic expression ! Barry O'Sullivan- A Jazz Hour.

Don Smith Radio Port Phillip I'm just loving this. Having had, and played on air, John Scofield's 'Groove Elation' for some years now, the chance to air not only an Australian version of the music, but one which added to and extended the original was a huge pleasure. Apart from my Wednesday night jazz show I also included it in the morning program, where a scant half dozen tracks divide the various segments. Starting out with a couple of minutes of 'Groove Elation', fading it down to a bed while I told the story of Daryl's collaboration with the eminent guitarist, and then fading up 'Gimme That Groove'. It worked ! Nothing ventured as they say !

Helen Jarroe Cairns FM89.1 Daryl - love your lyrics, love the combination of yours and Lily's voices. And I especially love the third track. Thanks for the privelege to play and review this incredible piece of work. No wonder the Schofields are so happy with it. With all best wishes for this and fort the future. Helen Jarroe

Bob Parzych WRTC Love the funky sound... Playing cuts 1 and 2

Palle Christensen Radio Jazz, Copenhagen Very good idea with words to Scofield compositions and a very good CD. When listening the first time it reminded me of the coorperation between Manhattan Transfer and Jon Hendricks. Palle Christensen, Copenhagen

Claude Colpaert Radio Campus - as I wrote it to Daryl, The cat within is a nice record with good mood and dynamics. I'm convinced
