Band Members: Me - tenor sax, Kristin Berardi - vocals, Gary Daley - organ, rhodes and accordion, Jonathon Zwartz - double bass, Tim Firth - drums
Influences: I'm open to most musical exploits. I like jazz and all sorts of other music. Too numerous to mention. This current album explores voice and saxophone on a lush bed of rhodes, bass and drums. I like writing stuff that is at times dissonant and yet does resolve, but in a way that's (hopefully) unpredictable. I'm also interested in lyrics in jazz and how a song is carried by a particular theme.
Sounds Like: 'Communication – that is the essence of the sounds we hear on Free Running. What this album communicates is the joy of communication itself – friends who are prepared to listen and contribute to a musical dialogue which ebbs and flows with its own shape. When I listen I have the simultaneous pleasure of hearing beautiful sounds and hearing the individual musical voices of my friends exploring, creating, and sharing something together. Now we can all share in it too'. (from Matt McMahon's liner notes)'Maegraith is also a superb tenor saxophonist, with a handsome tone and powerful expressiveness. As the disc progresses, his solos become more and more remarkable'. John Clare SMH review, June 08'This album is without a doubt appealing and heartily unique. Maegraith reaches a fusion of deep melodies and guides us into an interesting contemporary jazz trip coupled with tons of artistry and groovy spaces. It deserves a light!' Dr Ana Isabel Ordonez, jazzreview.com'The CD contains original jazz material that is very unique and refreshing! Top musicianship all around from everyone...The writing is outstanding - Tenor Saxophonist Richard Maegrath penned almost every song on the CD. The harmonic chord structure continually surprises without straying too far out in a-tonal la-la land. There is also an overall great emotional impact on the listener...so much jazz music loses the average un-initiated listener with over-lengthy improv solos, but the improv/soloing on this CD is tasteful and enhances the melody and mood of the songs'.
