About Me

DAVE GOODMAN BIO
Australian drummer Dave Goodman was born in Tamworth, NSW in 1977 and began playing organ and snare drum at the age of seven. After playing for some years he also began playing trumpet until he began playing drumset on 7th March 1989. He then went on to perform regularly with the Tamworth Regional Music Centre Big Band under the direction of ex-Sydney trombonist Peter Horton as well as with the Tamworth Regional Youth Orchestra under the baton of Derek Taylor, OBE. Dave also acquired some practical musical experience by playing multi-percussion, drumset and timpani in the orchestra pit of several Tamworth Musical Society productions under the careful guidance of mentor and teacher extraordinaire, Mrs. Di Hall, whilst taking several drum lessons with Peter Harkins. In 1994 Dave attended the Pan Pacific Jazz and Big Band Camp directed in Sydney by John Morrison, at which he received a return scholarship for the following year's camp.
Dave moved to Sydney in January 1995 at age seventeen to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, from whence he was awarded a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours in 1998 after drumset study with Barry Stewart and Gordon Rytmeister. Whilst at the Con, in early 1996 at the age of eighteen, he began working with the legendary Mike Nock Quartet.
Since winning second place in the National Jazz Awards in 1997, Dave has played music with a diverse range of artists, including visiting international artists Bob Berg, James Williams, Paul Bollenback, Daryl Grant, John Sneider, Bruce Paulson, Chris McNulty, Gordon Brisker, Phillip Johnston (all from USA), Riza Arshad (Indonesia), Hakuei Kim (Japan) as well as Australian icons James Morrison, Don Burrows, Galapagos Duck, Bernie McGann, Deni Hines, Billy Field, Roger Frampton, Julian Lee, George Golla, Greg Page, Geoff Harvey, Bob Barnard, Judy Bailey, Matt McMahon, Dale Barlow, Sean Wayland, Cathy Harley, Hamish Stuart, Andrew Robson, Sandy Evans, Carl Dewhurst, Mark Isaacs, James Muller, Fiona Burnett, Tim Rogers , Shelley Scown, Rhonda Burchmore, Mark Trevorrow, Paul Capsis , and David Campbell.
In addition to having toured extensively throughout Australia, Dave substituted for the great John Pochée in Pochée's own band Ten Part Invention in 1998 for an extensive tour of Asia, performing in Taiwan, The Philippines, China and Singapore at the Beijing International Jazz Festival, and the All The Best From Australia Festival (Manila) and again in 2006 for the band's 20th anniversary celebrations. Dave also performed in Japan for the Sapporo City Jazz Festival.

Dave has held faculty positions at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Australian Institute of Music teaching drumset, and appeared as a clinician for the Music Link sponsored Rhythmfest '99, the first percussive event of its kind in regional Australia. He has also been on the faculty for Pan Pacific Music Camps, Jazz Connection Camps and the Armidale Jazz Camp. Dave played with Latin ensemble Tigramuna for the Musica Viva In Schools program during 2003 and 2004, and has served as project manager for the Music Council of Australia's Music. Play For Life campaign.
After studying technique with Jim Piesse in Sydney for several years, Dave traveled to the United States of America where he studied with the legendary Joe Morello and Jim Chapin, partially funded by a generous grant received from the Australia Council for the Arts. Whilst in the U.S., Dave also studied with the great Billy Hart, subbing for Hart at the last minute in a band comprised of jazz luminaries Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner and Cecil McBee.
In addition to maintaining a busy live performance and recording schedule in Sydney and around Australia (recent artists are as varied as Matt Keegan, Hakuei Kim, Fiona Burnett, Tim Rogers, David Campbell, Galapagos Duck, Gian Slater, Rory O'Donoghue, James Valentine, Jess Green, James Morrison, Steve McKenna, Ten Part Invention, Mark Isaacs, Gerard Masters, Dale Barlow, Andy Walton, Mike Rivett, Bertie Blackman and Inga Liljeström), Dave composes for and leads his own projects, performing for SIMA and the Jazzgroove Association. He was nominated for a Freedman Fellowship in 2003, and awarded third place in the 2004 National Jazz Awards.
