About Me

Hey there - thanks for visiting!I took up bass guitar in 1984 at a high school in New Zealand. I was going to be a guitarist but didn't enrol for classes in time... My bass teacher played me some Jaco Pastorius tracks and my passion for bass began! After finishing high school I started freelancing in the Auckland jazz scene. I also bought my double bass, Shirley, to do the acoustic jazz thing. Shirley and I are still together today :-)I headed for the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 1993 and completed an Associate Diploma in Jazz Studies. So now I'm an Ass Dip Jazz Stud! Not sure what I think of that...I returned to New Zealand in 1995 and for the next 5 years performed regularly in the Auckland jazz scene. In August 2000 I returned to Sydney, attempting to qualify for the Sydney Olympics (that last bit's not quite true). Since then I have been doing the corporate 9-5 thing by day and freelancing the bass by night...One day I'd like to record my own album, and maybe even have a crack at writing pop music. Until then....Cheers,Matt.
