The Jade Diary is an Australian band with an evolving pop-folk-rock sound infused with lush melodies and insistent, soul-searching lyrics. It all began in an idyllic but isolated city called Perth, when Cheryl Lim decided to form a band called Opus Red alongside Renee Sherlock and others, playing unique covers from Summertime to Sweet Home Alabama. It was fun while it lasted, but after Opus Red disbanded, the passion that Cheryl had for creating music never went away. Many songs and Kleenexes later, she decided that she would give it another go - but this time, it was not going to be another serious hobby. This time, it would mean plunging straight into a business well-known for wannabes and near-misses. A crazy idea, but it had to work. So she enlisted the help of Renee and together they started The Jade Diary. After a year, Joshua O'Keefe, a student of music, joined on as lead guitarist and brought to the band, his own artistic vision and passion for music.
Combining the considerable musical talents of Renee Sherlock, songwriter and pianist, Joshua O’Keefe, lead guitarist and songwriter, and Cheryl Lim, lead vocalist and songwriter, The Jade Diary is inspired by many artists. Renee cites pop influences like Pink, Delta Goodrem, Gwen Stefani and Nelly Furtado, while Cheryl is inspired by Jewel, 80s pop, Tori Amos and Sting. Joshua on the other hand brings his love for country-pop-rock such as Keith Urban and U2 to the table. This diversity brings a uniqueness to The Jade Diary.
The innocent romance-seeking songs of Renee combined with the dark, meditative and alluring songwriting style of Cheryl, and pop-rock sensibilities of Joshua’s music results in a heady mix of whimsy and earthiness... which is where The Jade Diary sits, somewhere in the transition between the two.
