Kubrick shot these night time scenes with a lense from a spy sattelite, which he had aquired and modified to attach to a movie camera. Its incredibly high speed (F0.2) allowed him to use only candle light for these scenes, and its very narrow depth of field flattens the image, making it appear almost like a moving oil painting. The results allow this film, in my opinion, to stand appart from other 'period dramas' with its uniquely intimate and authentic beauty.
