Fi's Bio:
Fi Claus reveals the rock at the heart of her new self-titled band with iTunes release of her second single I’ll Be Spending 01st December 2007. Not only a coincidentally perfect title for the season, I’ll Be Spending also has the brightness and rock intensity ideal for Australian summer – the time of year relationships often begin…which is what the song is about.
Fi’s debut single Come Home (which saw her film clip on RAGE and rave reviews around Australia August 2007, including SINGLE OF THE WEEK in BEAT (Melb) and RAVE (Briz) magazines, top spot in INPRESS’s (Melb) HOWZAT! playlist, and Mx magazine calling Fi “a phenomenal Brisbane talent”) was essentially a crossover between her former acoustic duo Gorgeous (featuring national and community radio favourites like Whenever It Rains) and her new electric outfit: Fi Claus .
I’ll Be Spending , however, is unashamedly representative of where Fi has taken her writing in the past two years: firmly into the realm of bouncy Australian rock… or as Adelaide’s dB Magazine put it, “alt pop-rock treasure”. Fi’s “sweet sounding and quirky vocals” (Tessie Virgiotis, THE AGE) are instantly recognizable on I’ll Be Spending , dancing through outstandingly catchy verses and choruses that flash by over virtuoso rock mayhem of Andy Sylvio’s (Pete Murray) drums, James O’Brien’s (The Boat People) solid bass and Fi’s bright electric guitars.
While Claus's work has lead established music writers like Jeff Jenkins (INPRESS) to call her new songs “instant and infectious”, this tag also applies to the upcoming album from which they are drawn: Bijoux (French for gems or cute things; for 2008 release). Melodically fulfilling and ever intriguing, this disc clocks in just over the 25 minute minimum for title ‘longplayer’ – but the 11 songs featured pack a huge concentration of captivating energy and ideas into their interlocking vocal and instrument production. It doesn’t hurt that Fi Claus not only has “a sugar-spun voice” (Simone Ubaldi, BEAT), but she also wrote and produced all tracks (except Please Please, produced by Pete Murray), playing telecaster electric and nylon acoustic guitars, glockenspiel, cellos, violins, harmonium organ and train whistle, as well as writing parts for trumpet and xylophone. Then there are her intelligently simple lyrics, distinctively melody driven guitar, and that combination of no song sounding alike, but all clearly redolent of the album… oh and thanks to Andy and James- one of the best rhythm sections in Australian history.
I’ll Be Spending was recorded and engineered by hot young thing Matt Redlich (Massive Studios, Brisbane), who learnt his beautifully edgy know-how from Brisbane’s sonic guru Joe Malone (JLM Audio; makes specialized sound equipment for major rock acts in Australia like John Butler, Wolfmother, Regurgitator etc, as well as consoles, compressors and speakers for studios and galleries around the world). Matt’s Briz location was the reason for Fi’s return to Brisbane after 3 years in her birth-place, Melbourne (she actually wrote I’ll Be Spending in a terrace house in Carlton VIC, the song being set around some Lygon Street events), and with the way I’ll Be Spending has turned out, she should be very glad she did.
Fi Claus will Tour Australia January-March 2008 to Nationally Launch her second iTunes Single: I’ll Be Spending , including cities like Launceston and Hobart for the first time ever… so make sure you start your next year with a Fi Claus show on the I’ll Be Spending Single Launch Tour!!
“…a songwriter destined to make a big impact on the Queensland, Australian and International scenes” Matt Connors, Ed – TIMEOFF
"One thing abundantly clear is that the songwriting on display here is captivating to the point of perfection… If these songs are anything to go by, Fi Claus ’s upcoming record will be several slices of pop gold.” Live Review by Kurt Sanders, March 2007, RAVE
