know the ledge...
DJ SPINNA (wonderwax, beyond real)
Turning heads throughout the industry, globetrotting selecta, DJ Spinna is known for his ability to mix genres from hip-hop, house, funk, soul, and disco seamlessly, while turning the party out. Production credits are like a who's who in music... from hip-hop legends Brand Nubian, Masta Ace and Guru (Gangstarr), De La Soul (“Stakes is High”) Das EFX and the Jungle Brothers... to up-and-coming soul artists' J Dilla bred Platinum Pied Pipers and Bay Area songstress Goapele as with the well respected Les Nubian... to icons like George Michael to Mary J. Blige to Motown Records, Donald Byrd, Eddie Kendricks, Betty Carter, Roy Ayers and Al Jarreau.
But it wasn't until DJ Spinna's monumental version of Shawn Escoffery’s “Days Like This” that catapulted Spinna into his now stately, touted presence in the dance music scene. Soon after, Spinna’s own label, Wonderwax was born. A home for his soulful dance classics, the imprint came to fruition in 2003, and has seen memorable releases from contemporaries such as Rich Medina, Lady Alma, Blaze, The Free Radikalz and Selan. Spinna’s collaborated on stage alongside contemporary luminaries like Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Joe Claussell, Bugz In The Attic, Osunlade, Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, Keb Darge, DJ Scratch (EPMD), DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist.
Yet nothing compares to his celebrated Stevie Wonder inspired WONDER-Full,, DJ-performances (aside friend and contributor Bobbito Garcia). Garnering overwhelming fanfare each occasion done - whether NYC, LA, San Francisco, Japan or beyond – if a WONDER-Full,, event is booked at a club you can put money on a line around the block and thousands of Stevie Wonder admirers rocking the house. And while he’s gained so much attention and accolade for his tributes to Stevie, Spinna is not incapable of doing the same for any other pivotal forefather. Visit New York City any given month and find a number of Spinna themed throw-downs in the city’s esteemed venues - each as memorable as the last.
Its true that there are other like-minded DJ/Producers in the world comparable to DJ Spinna, but for the most part, they choose a genre and master it. Ask them to flip another variety with the same intense knowledge and sleek-savvy and you’ll be hard pressed to find someone that’ll do it to like DJ Spinna.
DJ LADY SHA (los angeles)
A selectress, musician, and vocalist, Lady Sha continuously returns home to LA a citizen of the world as reflected in her eclectic DJ sets. Gracing stages both nationally and internationally, DJ Lady Sha is one of the nation's top female DJ's. Born in Iran and trained in turntablism while living in California's Bay Area and in LA, Shaden was exposed to a wide range of music from an early age. Spinning heated hip hop sets fused with reggae/dancehall, soul, middle eastern, and global sounds, she has moved dancefloors worldwide. One of the few female DJ's rocking parties in Jamaica yearly and the first female DJ to spin live on South African radio airwaves (2004 southern Africa tour), Lady Sha engraves her signature in the music and nightlife industries universally. Currently, Lady Sha innovates the nightlife experience of LA through her special events firm, Lioness Entertainment, while also touring SF/NY/Miami/Vegas and cities around the globe. www.myspace.com/djladysha
PROOF (massive selector)
Quiet as kept, San Francisco's PROOF is one of the West Coast's elite, throwing game-changing events with his Massive Selector brethren and spinning all over the place with the hottest selections. Heavily influenced by classic funk, deep soul, hip-hop, and house, PROOF's sound definitely cater to the dancers. His mix cd's, known for their global flavor and crossing genres seamlessly, have created quite a buzz with music lovers. PROOF's latest release, "BROWN SOUNDS" is an "eclectic mix of future beats, latin treats, and afro heat for the discerned dance floor" and is available now at turntablelab.com. You can catch PROOF at his monthly FUTURECLASSIC every first friday at Poleng Lounge in San Francisco.
ABOUT JAYVI VELASCO (meow ent, remedy sf)
"To me hes more then a DJ, Jayvi knows exactly what we(dancers) want!! Setting the energy, feeding the vibe. If youre blessed enough to step into a room that hes rocking, you'll see it, you'll feel it. House is a spiritual connection and this brotha is responsible for many of my sweat filled nights. When I step into his vibe I AM ALIVE AND FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Thank you brotha. Thank you." -Odie (Flo-ology Dance Collective)
HAKOBO & TOKYO COMPONENT (theculprits)
To say that San Francisco's theCulprits are the underground's poster children for hot international music would be an understatement. Tokyo Component, Hakobo and Eug, a.k.a. The Culprits, have been biding their time and paying their dues by bringing out acts such as Jazzanova, Gilles Peterson, Little Louie Vega, Kenny Dope and Kyoto Jazz Massive. Those in "the know" are aware that these names are nothing to scoff at. Those without soul definitely need not apply. The Culprits hit it hard on all accounts by bringing the best in multiple genres from funk, soul, jazz, hip hop, house to broken beat. With such refined tastes in music, one might think that these guys come from places like Canada, Japan or Mexico. Well, actually, they do, and lucky for us Bay Area natives, they've got their hands deep into San Francisco's nightlife and were ranked by 7x7 Magazine as having one of the hottest Friday nights in the city this year.
FUTURECLASSIC is a monthly dedicated to bridging the gap between future flavors and classic cuts every FIRST FRIDAY at poleng lounge in san francsico. expect to hear funk, soul, disco, boogie, jazz, hip-hop, house, global rhythms and beyond from world class dj's and artists every month!

My Interests

Massive Selector is a San Francisco based collective of artists, djs, free thinkers, and corporate refugees who share a passion for art and music culture. Through our event production, media projects, and design we motivate, build and cultivate a left coast community. We are selectors for the masses.

Basically we started as a group of friends from Berkeley, SF State, Academy of Art, and CCAC, throwing parties in SF and LA. The venture grew into a business that let us explore our creativity and passions.

Our projects: some for fun, some for profit... all for the love. The most visible are the events... but our crew is involved in a lot of different things... art, music, fashion, web design, architecture, engineering and even entrepreneurship.

Hit us up if you want to party, create, motivate, organize, or build... whats life without a hustle?

I'd like to meet:

People with a chill vibe, passionate about life and music, whose tastes are not defined by mainstream media.

Hit us up if you want to party, create, motivate, organize, or build... whats life without a hustle?

*PROOFS OCTOBER PICKS*

PROOF’S TOP 5

1. BUGZ IN THE ATTIC “Don’t Stop The Music” (KV5 Mix) – downtempo re-ish of BITA’s “Don’t Stop The Music.” press play... rewind. and press play again.
2. SUGARLOAF GANGSTERS “Avant Le Jazz” –a new joint from sugarloaf gangsters (aka spiritual south) off the oh-so-solid GAMM label… those funky Swedes know how to pick ‘em. check out this bossa infused heater sure to warm up your cold turkey after thanksgiving (that was lame.) on the real, checked out spiritual south at boca last month and threw down one of the dopest sets i’ve heard in awhile… too bad there were only 4 people including the bartender there to hear it.
3. SYGAIRE “Duex Mille Duex” – new dancefloor burner from sonar kollektiv… afro-heat for your wanabe afro-feet.
4. CHARMAINE BURNETTE “(Am I The) Same Girl” – dusty springfield’s 60’s classic gets a rub-a-dub remake by charmaine burnette, taken off the PARTY KELLER 2 compilation by international beat digger and german music connoisseur florian keller (see compost records).
5. JAY-Z “Show Me What You Got” – i’m sorry but just blaze kills it on the new hova joint… sampling lafayette afro rock band’s “darkest light," p.e.’s “show em what you got” AND shaft’s “shaft in africa” like a champ! he just hit me in a soft spot… 2 thumbs up.
*CLASSIC PICK* RISCO CONNECTION “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now” – a disco remake of McFadden and Whitehead's commercial hit that in my opinion, is way better than the original… has that ny loft party feel a la 1978 with a reggae twist. hot.
