HAMMERED GRUNTS - 2008A Right to Fight - American Scheme - Into Action - Monotony - Sixteen Years - Self Destruct - Shopping Spree - Fuck This Law - In Your Boots - VNC Pig - TV Time - Reality - Reckless - Weak and Oppressed - Far So FarThe Hammered Grunts' debut self titled album, is a hardcore punk rock assault on the senses.Having cut their chops playing innumerable shows in the Portland/Vancouver underground music scene, Hammered Grunts have offered a genuinely frenetic, fast paced and brutal record worthy of their musical ancestor's praise. While the self-released album keeps in line with convention on certain punk aesthetics, such as song length ("Shopping Spree" clocks in at 40 seconds), and 16th note drumming, the Hammered Grunts' music is more varied, less repetitious and more adventerous than that of a lot of their peers. Taking their cue from more traditional old school styles, the band adds more of their own flavour, as well as elements from more recent hardcore acts. For being such a young band with such young members, you really get the impression that these guys have been playing and writing together for a considerably longer duration of time. There is a tightness and cohesiveness to their style and their music that you don't see in a lot of newer bands, especially on a debut album. While their recordings could use some cleaner mastering and their music could use a more accessible touch, their professionalism and fierce local fanbase could transform this band into a very powerful regional draw. It'll be interesting to see how their future work turns out and what kinds of shows they can land.Having spent years reviewing electronic and industrial albums, it's a pleasure to get a taste of what else is going on the music world, especially here at home in the Northwest where we have so many creative and talented artists.
