Domitian, Emperor of Rome

Dominus et Deus!

About Me

Well, I'm the last of the Flavians. That great family that gave you the Coliseum. Had to wait in the wings for a long time. Held things down in Rome for months when my father was first proclaimed Emperor but was continually overlooked during his reign because everybody thought my brother was perfect. You might say I have a chip on my shoulder. A lot of folks think I'm a degenerate.

My Interests

Poetry and the arts. The full power of the law. All the debauchery that wealth and privilege affords.

I'd like to meet:

The Goddess Minerva.

Music:

Harp or Lyra during meals. Panflute when entering entertaining a lady.

Movies:

Gladiator, Beh-Hur, Spartacus, Quo Vadis, Caligula.

Books:

Metamorphoses (Ovid), Satyricon (Petronius), Aeneid (Virgil), Odes (Horace).

Heroes:

Augustus, Germanicus, Julius, Pompey, Alexander, Hercules, Castor and Pollux, Romulus, and Minerva.

My Blog

What ever is to be done with Flavius Archippus?

Thank you Velius Paulus for dropping another mess in my lap.

On the Care of the Hair

Do you not see that I too am tall and comely to look on? And yet the same fate awaits my hair, and I bear with resignation the ageing of my locks in youth. Be assured that nothing is more pleasing tha...

Staying amused...

Played a new game at dinner last evening. I had a slave stand at a distance and hold out the palm of his right hand for a mark, with the fingers spread; then I shot arrows between his fingers. My gues...

As if there was any doubt...

You scored as Domitian. Being Domitian isn't easy. The only way you understand how to do things well is by doing them yourself, and indeed you do them well, but the exclusion of important men from th...

Jews, Jews, Jews

Subversive tracts have been brought to my attention. The work of a militant Jew, John. One of the core followers of one Joshua Bar Joseph who was executed, seemingly as a safety precaution, during the...

Protecting our youth

I spent much of my youth impoverished. Not completely destitute, mind you, but rarely with more than to make ends meet. Nero made sure that we were never without our status, but he arranged thing in w...

The trouble with exposing conspiracies

It is difficult to have absolute power and not be hated. Taking swift, decisive action against those who threaten that power is an in-built necessity. Unfortunately, every act of self-preservation inc...

About my father's sense of humor

As my father, the Emperor Vespasian, grew older, his natural sense of humor became increasingly perverse as did his obsession for finding new sources of revenue. Nothing like the elaborate hoaxes of C...

Anecdotes from the dinner table...

Julius Agricloa's son-in-law was at dinner last night, exchanging rather amusing anecdotes with Gaius Tranquillus about the infamous Agrippina the Younger (the mother of the Emperor Nero, sister of th...

The Flavian legacy

I've commissioned the building of a new arch for the head of the Via Scara. It will be christened the Arch of Titus in honor of my father and brother and their victories in the east and will depict th...
