About Me

V
Veracity Voice and Vision is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering voices within disadvantaged communities in Uganda. V’s primary objectives are to provide education for children who live in extreme poverty, for children who have been orphaned by the HIV/AIDS crisis, and for girls who have been the victims of rape or early pregnancy and subsequently rejected by their families. For the primary school students V provides for the children’s school fees, uniforms, shoes, meals, books, school supplies and exam fees. The same fees are paid for secondary school students in addition to boarding fees which cover mattresses, sheets and all necessary personal items required to live in the dorms. All of V’s programs focus on reducing dependency and empowering the children’s local communities, therefore, in addition to providing educational opportunities V has also initiated small business projects with the mothers of the children we are supporting.
To date there are two separate small business projects in operation, including a craft project and a chicken farm project to help the mothers generate a larger income to support their families. Finally, V is committed to improving the health of the families we support by providing the families with mosquito nets, mattresses, medicine and vaccinations and also by facilitating transportation and fees for HIV/AIDS testing for EVERY interested individual or family regardless of their participation within our program.

V
This is currently our first year as a non-profit organization and we truly appreciate all of the support we have so generously received in our first year that has made all of this possible. We currently have two country directors in Jinja, Uganda, who oversee the daily affairs of V on the ground. Peter Wananda is our country director of education development and Joan Wananda is our country director of women’s affairs.
My name is Heather McGorman and I am the founder of Veracity Voice and Vision here in New York City. I have my BA in political science from Columbia University and my MA in African studies from Yale University. In 2003-04 I spent one year studying at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and I have subsequently spent extended periods of time in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to conduct academic research and also to travel and enjoy these beautiful countries and the wonderful people I have met along the way. As V begins to grow we will need more volunteers to help us achieve our objectives and to help us expand further to allow an increasing number of women and children to empower themselves through education and business.V
Please click on the picture link to see pictures of the individual women and children that V is currently supporting. Every child has a picture except those girls who have been victims of rape as we felt it inappropriate to take their pictures after hearing their traumatic stories.
