Life cannot exist without water. Yet for most of us clean water is something we take for granted.1.1 billion people worldwide live without safe drinking water and everyday over 25,000 of them die from preventable, water-related illnesses.Of the 680 million who live in Sub-Saharan Africa, approximately ONE-HALF do not have access to a disease and parasite-free water source.
PROJECT ONE: Wairasa, Uganda This rural village in Eastern Uganda has a population of approximately 1200 people. The water they currently consume is drawn from a dangerous and stagnant hole €“ which is a breeding ground for Malaria-transmitting mosquitoes. This water source is also four miles from most homes and is used by domestic animals as well as people. In October 2006, Drop In The Bucket broke on our first project - two wells for the people of Wairasa. We began the process by commissioning a hydro-geological survey. The results of this study determined the location and depth of underground water. Next, we travelled to Wairasa to oversee the digging and installation of the wells. Your donations went directly to this project and thanks to all of your generous donations the people of Wairas now have clean water for the first time. Of course that was just the start, project two followed and now we are looking at sites for wells 3,4 and 5. Please check out our website www.dropinthebucket.org for info about how you can help. Because water is a basic human right, please join us in the fight to help provide clean water.
