Breakdance Project, Uganda!

BREAKDANCE FOR A CAUSE.

About Me

HERE'S A NEW VIDEO (HIPHOP AT H.EA.L.S)FROM THE "HIPHOP THERAPY" PROJECT IN GULU (NORTHERN UGANDA). It involved Toki Wright a Hiphop artist from Minesota plus Breakdance project Uganda teachers Abramz,Hakim Zziwa & Abdul Muyingo. The Head organiser of the project is Melissa Adams from D.C... width="425" height="350" ..This is a project based in Uganda (East Africa) that offers free breakdance classes to anyone who wishes to learn. It was started by Abramz (The project manager and a Ugandan Hiphop artiste & breakdancer),Emile Dineen (an Irish breakdancer) plus Antonio (a Ugandan breakdancer). Abramz and Emile met at a weekly Hiphop night that Abramz used to host at Sabrinas pub in Kampala. These 2 guys both had a great love for breaking and Hiphop at large. Abramz used to scout for breakdancers around Uganda and always gave them a platform at the Hiphop night where they got exposure plus meeting and interacting with other breakdancers. In order to exchange skills -which worked! Abramz had given up on dancing 8 years earlier, but had always an idea of starting a breakdance class. But he didn't know how or where to start exactly because it takes a lot to get a project like that started. Until him and Antonio teamed up with Emile. Emile helped alot in laying the foundation for the project. He was the first proffessional teacher that the project got & he voluteered for 3 consecutive months. After that he had to return to the UK, where he lives and works. The project has been running since february 2006 and has over 300 students countrywide. There is practice mondays and wednesdays in the evenings. Among the students there are disadvantaged children ( some are street kids),others are from Nsambya babies home and some are teenagers from an orphanage, called Uganda Children's Centre, which is based in Makindye. Also primary ,secondary and university students come for practice -not forgetting international school students plus employees from different sectors. So far the project is based at Sharing Youth centre (Nsambya) where they rent the hall monthly, in order to have classes there. The project has also reached Northern Uganda where offers monthly classes under the "Hiphop therapy" project. It works hand in hand with H.E.A.L.S an NGO based in northern Uganda. The majority of the children in the Northern class were formerly abducted by the LRA rebels. Some are AIDS orphans and others come from helpless families. We've also reached Mbale,Eastern Uganda where we classes quarterly, collaborating with FDNC (Foundation for Development of Needy Communities). The plan is to extend the classes to different regions of Uganda -with time. They believe they will make it -with support of other organisations and individuals, who are willing to support the project in different ways.
