Doubt: A History

About Me

Doubt: A History is a history of religious and philosophical doubt, all over the world, throughout history. The earliest explicit religious disbelief is the Carvaka who in 600 BCE rejected every aspect of Hinduism, saying the priests just wanted money, there is no such thing as karma, and their are no spirits: the world is wonderful and it is what it is.In writing this book I found religious doubt right through the medieval period, and through, without break to the Enlightenment. The book is full of great stories about people as varied as Confucius, Maimonides, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Margaret Sanger. Celebrating rationalism while taking religious questions seriously yields a whole new way of looking at the world. Doubt: A History presents a counter-narrative to conventional intellectual histories.
