GETTING THE EQUIPMENT YOU NEED
As adaptive equipment gets more sophisticated, getting the stuff you need gets harder. The durable medical equipment industry says the restrictive behavior by the mammoth bureaucracy known as CMS – the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services – is an overreaction to spotty Medicare fraud. CMS, which sets policy and reimbursement rates routinely adopted by the insurance industry, says it only wants to cut costs for taxpayers and consumers. Whatever the cause, DME dealers and consumers are feeling the squeeze. JOSIE BYZEK examines CMS’ competitive bidding program, while TIM GILMER finds examples of denials, delay, and red tape in getting the equipment you need. Cover illustration by Doug Davis
