About Me

Massimo Carboni - tenor, alto and soprano saxophones Born in 1959, he made his appareance into the italian musical scene in the mid '80s playing with pop and jazz-rock bands, but soon moved almost exclusively to jazz, joining the finest Sardinia-based jazz musicians and ensembles (among them D.D.Band, Sardegna Oltre il Mare, Billy's garage, Metrò etc).
By the late '80s he was playing mainly as soloist with several ensembles and started some remarkable collaboration with many inspiring and world known jazz musicians like Tom Harrell, Carla Bley, Billy Cobham, Steve Swallow, Paolo Fresu, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell, Tim Hagans, Maria Pia De Vito, Colin Towns, Andy Sheppard, Furio di Castri, Giorgio Gaslini, Richard Galliano, Perico Sambeat, Claudio Fasoli, Bruno Tommaso, Eric Vloeimans, Dave Holland, Flavio Boltro, Maurizio Giammarco, David Linx, Antonello Salis, Tom Kirkpatrick, Hector C.Bisignani, Franco Cerri, Stefano Cerri, Roberto Gatto, Ettore Fioravanti, Roberto Cipelli, Steve Grossman, Giulio Capiozzo, Mario Raja, Rita Marcotulli, Emanuele Cisi, Paolino Dalla Porta, Marco Tamburini..

Formerly with the "Sardinia Big Band", conducted by Bruno Tommaso, since 1991 he is the first tenor saxophone of the “ Orchestra Jazz della Sardegna ”, renowned Italian big band (cond. by G.A.Frassetto) with which he toured abroad. Beside being the organizer of the international competition "Scrivere in Jazz", this ensemble has a portfolio of hundreds of concerts and has published various recordings such as Scrivere in Jazz (1996), Porgy and Bess (1999), Sacred Concert-Jazz Te Deum (2000), Il brutto anatroccolo (2005), Blau (2004), About Mozart (2006) and the upcoming "OJS plays Colin Towns".
Massimo is a co-founder of the Woodstore Quintet which has recorded “Distanza” (Splasc(h) 2002) and recently “41st Parallel” (Nagel Heyer Records, 2005): this latest production (featuring Tim Hagans on trumpet and Maria Pia De Vito, guest vocals) has been met very favourably worldwide and selected as one of the best albums of year 2006 on "The Independent" (Uk)
Currently Massimo also plays alto saxophone in the “Birth of the Cool” ensemble which features Paolo Fresu on trumpet.
Massimo has recorded for Nagel Heyer Records, Splasc(H), Soul Note, Flex Records, Il Manifesto, Wide Sound etc. with different bands and settings (from jazz to pop music, from duo to large ensembles, together with musicians like Paolo Fresu, Flavio Boltro, Giorgio Gaslini, Colin Towns, Maria Pia De Vito, David Linx, Tim Hagans etc.)

"...bright arrangements and engaging solos (...) 41st Parallel it's a highly enjoyable album with a nod to yesteryear and a few innovations.”
The Independent (London, Uk) - “Album of the Week”

"...Woodstore Quintet dispense un charme certain, naviguant dans un univers inspiré d'une qualité d'une belle amplitude. A la fois étonnant, très bien fait, et constamment renouvelé."
Jazz Notes (France)

“...41st Parallel is a sound piece of work and a cleaver way of integrating the past.”
Musica Jazz (Italy)

"..American trumpeter Tim Hagans is in towering form as the featured guest with (...) the Woodstore Quintet (...) Massimo Carboni's soft, round tenor blends beautifully with Hagans in ensemble, and his adept use of space offers a contrast to the trumpeter as a soloist. Mariano Tedde, a capable pianist, wrote almost all the material and, with Paolo Spanu (bass) and Gianni Filindeu (drums), forms a sympathetic rhythm section (...) just a fine, tight, well-focused band, and Hagans and Carboni players who would grace any ensemble."
The Irish Times (Ireland) “…a new release and an international stage for Woodstore, the only italian group to record with the prestigious Nagel Heyer Records label. "41st Parallel" is enhanced by Tim Hagans and Maria Pia De Vito and express a cosmopolitan taste of great impact and a fresh, innovative sound …”
