About Me

Began studying privately and playing the piano in the 1980's. After a short period of classical training, he switched his focus to the jazz idiom and made a careful study of the complete aspects of music, including improvisation, harmonic movement and theory. He attended several seminares and workshops held by some of the most authoritative european pianists and teachers such as Franco D'Andrea, John Taylor, Riccardo Zegna and Amedeo Tommasi.Since 1990's he has performed as a bandleader in numerous groups, spanning the differente styles and the variegated repertory of the jazz tradition and carrying out multiple projects of tribute to the legendary jazz musicians: Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Play Train, Chet Baker, Thelonius Monk etc... As a performer and a composer, he won the 2001 Barga Jazz International Competition with the "Woodstore Quintet", which he has been leading since 2000 with other musicians evolved into a very tight unit. The "Woodstore" was a host of prestigious international festivals (like Nuoro Jazz, Terni Jazz Festival and Earls Court Italian Jazz Festival of London). Moreover, the quintet produced two recordings which feature Mariano's original compositions:"Distanza" (Splasc(h) records, 2002), and "41th parallel" (Nagel Heyer, 2005) featuring the trumpet player Tim Hagans and the singer Maria Pia De Vito. Both as a sideman and a leader, he has intensely taken part in important musical events all over Sardinia (Time in Jazz, unciufree Jazz, Musica sulle Bocche....) Since 1999 he has played with "Orchestra Jazz della Sardegna" as a permanent pianist, with whom he toured China in 2001 and Spain in 2004, and appeared in many concerts. During his career, Mariano has performed and collaborated with such important musicians as Tom Harrell, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Andy Sheppard, Bob Mintzer, Rosario Giuliani, Furio di Castri, Maria Pia De Vito, David Linx, Paolo Fresu, Maurizio Giammarco, Giorgio Gaslini, Bruno Tommaso, Colin Towns, Mario Raja, Flavio Boltro, Fred Johnson, Javier Girotto, Renato D'Aiello, Emilio Soana, Attilio Zanchi, Nicola Muresu, Roberto-Billy Sechi, Sheila Jordan, Quentin Collins, Rachel Gould. At present he collaborates with Tim Hagans, Tom Kirkpatrik, Eric Vloiemans, Andy Gravish. In addiction to his activities as a performer and composer, he has undertaken several educational activities for about ten years teaching in local classes and workshops. Since 2005 he has worked as a part-time instructor at the Conservatory in Sassari.

"...bright arrangements and engaging solos (...) 41st Parallel it's a highly enjoyable album with a nod to yesteryear and a few innovations.”
The Independent (London, Uk) - “Album of the Week”

"...Woodstore Quintet dispense un charme certain, naviguant dans un univers inspiré d'une qualité d'une belle amplitude. A la fois étonnant, très bien fait, et constamment renouvelé."
Jazz Notes (France)

“...41st Parallel is a sound piece of work and a cleaver way of integrating the past.”
Musica Jazz (Italy)

"..American trumpeter Tim Hagans is in towering form as the featured guest with (...) the Woodstore Quintet (...) Massimo Carboni's soft, round tenor blends beautifully with Hagans in ensemble, and his adept use of space offers a contrast to the trumpeter as a soloist. Mariano Tedde, a capable pianist, wrote almost all the material and, with Paolo Spanu (bass) and Gianni Filindeu (drums), forms a sympathetic rhythm section (...) just a fine, tight, well-focused band, and Hagans and Carboni players who would grace any ensemble."
The Irish Times (Ireland) “…a new release and an international stage for Woodstore, the only italian group to record with the prestigious Nagel Heyer Records label. "41st Parallel" is enhanced by Tim Hagans and Maria Pia De Vito and express a cosmopolitan taste of great impact and a fresh, innovative sound …”
