Launched in 1982 by the French Minister for culture Jack Lang, the Fête de la Musique is held every 21st June, the day of the summer solstice and is today the only Pan-European cultural event dedicated to music, organised jointly by professional and institutional partners from 12 European countries, involving both professional performers and amateur musicians, and aimed at the whole population. Completely different from a music festival, which normally focuses on one composer or one specific type of music and follows a program selected by an artistic director, the Fête de la Musique is above all else a free popular Fête, open to any participant (amateur or professional) who wants to perform in it.It brings together all styles of music and targets the whole population, aiming to popularise musical practice and acquaint the young and the not so young from all social backgrounds with all forms of musical expression. Hence the reason why its preferred locations include the open-air, streets, parks, courtyards, museums, castles, etc. Furthermore, the Fête de la Musique is an opportunity to encourage the major music institutions (orchestra, operas, choirs, etc.) to perform outside their usual locations, or, on the contrary, for them to welcome styles of music all too often considered to be of little importance: traditional music, pop music, jazz, rock, rap, techno, etc.In this way it offers an opportunity to develop exchanges between city centres and their outlying areas, to promote encounters and exchanges between young musicians and new talents. In 1999, the Fête de la Musique took place in 107 countries around the world. Furthermore, today it represents Europe's foremost symbolic event. This one-day event is organised as a Fête open to everybody, inviting both amateur musicians and professional musicians, promoting a wide variety of kinds and styles of music and demonstrating its interchange. Free of charge, it's aimed at the whole population, regardless of age group or social background. All round the year its aim is to produce and coordinate everyone involved (state and financial partners, independent producers and artists) for the preparation and the execution of the productions. M.E.S.O. in Greece is in charge of the communication and promotion of all the activities involved in the E.M.D. and must also promote it through Greece in order to include more cities in the network.Myspace Layouts + Myspace GraphicsMyspace Layouts + Myspace Graphics a
