Built for Comfort

About Me

2001 - August - started singing lessons as antidote to depression. 2002 - Oct - entered talent contest singing to backing track. Lost to a couple of 12 year olds playing weird stuff on guitars, but preparing for this made me decide to take up singing in public. 2003 - June -first gig. Hooked. Never had so much fun in my life. Now - gigging regularly, mainly jazzy and easy listening, but like to let loose when I can! Play at small festivals, hotels, pubs, coffee bars and private functions. I'll play anywhere!Big powerful voice - I can really belt but also be extremely intimate. Wicked sense of humour and great delight in audience interaction.

Your favourite kind of jazz...and blues...and soul....and the rest. Me, Col on guitar, Grigor on bass and Bill on drums. Very fine musicians to work with mmmmmm. Mmmmmmmmmm again.I also do several gigs a year with the fabulous Paul Harrison.ALSO...I’m freelance, so I am happy to guest with other bands and musicians , and frequently do. I can put together any kind of line-up you like, for any kind of function
Influences: Dee Dee Bridgewater, Barbara Morrison, Connie Lush, Sheila Jordan, Miriam Makeba, Aretha, Mavis Staples, Etta James, Sweet Honey In The Rock, of COURSE Ella and Sara and Billie. Big Mama Thornton, kdlang, Joni Mitchell... Annie Ross, Bette Midler, Julie London, Madeleine Peyroux, Jane Monheit. The Romanian National women's choir, Mongolian overtone singing--- it goes on and on! Hugely influenced too by all the musicians I've worked with...Graeme Stephen, Garry Gibb, Mike Rae and Bill Kemp, who together introduced me to the joys of live jazz. Paul Harrison, wizard teacher, phenomenal band-mate, and utterly inspirational musician. Colin Black and Kenny Irons with whom I've worked regularly over 3 years now - and damn we've learned a lot. Teachers - the tutors on the FDJVW's - especially Barbara Morrison and Sheila Jordan, but Fionna Duncan herself, Sophie Bancroft, Ronnie Rae and Brian Kellock too. And Ruby Rendall, and the inspirational Richard Ingham. And all the recordings of the greats I've listened to and been moved by... ach I'm going on and on, but the people who influence me are those with a real emotional connection to their music, and the ability to communicate that.
