Closer to home, David regularly performs at The Jazz Bar and The Lot in Edinburgh, and Bar Brel in Glasgow, not forgetting Café Artista on Marchmont Road– David recommends Bruno’s coffee as the best in the Southside of Edinburgh.
From 2001-04, David played with salsa/ folk fusion group Salsa Celtica, performing in North America (including New York’s Lincoln Center), Singapore, and many (50+) major festivals in Europe, including WOMAD. He contributed several arrangements to their album ‘El Agua de la Vida’. In 2003, David set up his first Scottish tour as a bandleader. His current group, Quiet Now, pays homage to the gentler side of jazz, emphasising atmosphere, space and interaction. David also continues to compose, arrange and perform new compositions with his trio and quartet.

He currently teaches on the undergraduate course in jazz at Strathclyde University, conducts workshops for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, and has been a guest tutor at the Glasgow and Edinburgh Jazz Summer Schools. Hi, and thanks for dropping by to say hello. I’m a jazz piano player, composer and arranger living in Edinburgh, Scotland.

At the moment I have three regular groups of my own: Quiet,Now , a duo with Brazilian bassist Mario Caribe; my International Trio, with Mario again and the American drummer Adam Sorensen; and also my new quartet, TETRAGON, with Brian Molley (sax), Ed Kelly (bs) and Stuart Brown (dr). With all these groups, I play a mixture of my own compositions and some great standards (from Irving Berlin to Wayne Shorter, and Branford Marsalis to Britney Spears!). In most playing situations, I prefer a conversational approach to group improvisation, and I hope that what we play as individuals feeds the other members of the group.

In addition, I am a featured writer in the Scottish Jazz Composers’ Ensemble; two of my compositions were featured in a live broadcast on BBC Radio 3 from the Glasgow Jazz Festival 2006.

Influences: As a pianist playing contemporary jazz, it’s impossible not to be influenced by Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett – and I have taken a lot of information from these two great musicians. Other big influences are Bud Powell, Bill Evans, Kenny Barron and guitarist John Scofield. Chick Corea and McCoy Tyner maybe not quite so much, but I have a great respect for their artistry.
Lesser known people that I have studied include the wonderful South African pianist Bheki Mseleku and Dave Kikoski. I’d also like to pay tribute to the great piano teachers I’ve had; Nikki Iles, Simon Purcell and John Taylor.
I’ve also studied the lines of a lot of saxophonists, including John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Dexter Gordon and Branford Marsalis and Joe Lovano, and from a compositional and arranging point of view, I’ve checked out a lot of Bud Powell, Lennie Tristano/ Lee Konitz/ Warne Marsh, Kenny Wheeler, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, Tadd Dameron, Cole Porter and Miles Davis. My favourite pop song at the moment is “Toxic” by Britney Spears.
