About Me

Vance Adair has been singing since the age of 12. A career in higher education meant that he put aside his musical ambitions for some time. However, he returned to the scene 4 years ago and has enjoyed gigs and residencies throughout Scotland ever since. In 2004 the Glasgow Herald stated that Vance "has one of the classiest voices in the business: unlike many of the other pseudo-crooners on the Scottish scene at the moment, Vance is the real deal. A joy." Vance performs regularly with his musical partner, acclaimed veteran jazz pianist Ronnie Findlay, who provides the accompaniment on some of these tunes. As the occasion dictates, Vance also performs with bands of all shapes and sizes. He currently lives in Aberdeen. It is Vance's ambition to communicate and collaborate with the very best musicians from Scotland and beyond.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: Coming soon.
Influences: Carmen McRae, Frank Sinatra, Shirley Horn, Sarah Vaughan, Carol Sloane, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Zoot Sims, Nancy Wilson, Ella, Carol Kidd, Kurt Elling, Oscar Peterson, Brad Mehldau, Duke Ellington, Anita O'Day, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Pearl Bailey, Mark Murphy, Bill Charlap, Bing Crosby, Diane Reeves, Tony Bennett, marian Mcpartland, Patricia Barber,Rufus Wainwright, Stan Getz, Count Basie, Tierney Sutton, Peggy Lee, Abbey Lincoln, Artie Shaw, Nancy Lamott, Billy May, Woody Herman, McCoy Tyner, Mabel Mercer......and several thousand others. Accomplished jazz singing pays attention not only to the lyric and a careful grasp of melodic invention, it must also be accompanied by a voice that is tuneful, flexible and is possessed of range. It is ironic that, today, many singers who are possessed of precisely these qualities are sometimes mistaken (disparagingly) as 'cabaret' singers. Consequently, there are now legions of 'breathy' chanteuses crowding the airwaves who adopt the mantle of 'jazz singer' solely on account of the fact that they have attended a 'workshop.' I like to think that careful listeners are still able to discern the difference between the two.
Sounds Like: ......he can give both a novel and truthful account of a song.
