The area now known as Melbourne has undergone significant changes over time. Ten million years ago, there was tremendous volcanic activity to the west of Melbourne, and the resulting lava flows still influence Melbourne today. The volcanic basalt from these lava flows – known in Melbourne as bluestone – still forms the foundation of many of our streets and buildings. This blue-grey stone helps give Melbourne its atmosphere of sombre formality.
Melbourne, despite this somewhat sombre exteria is an extraordinary city. From the bustling European style laneways filled with cafes and boutique shopping, to the extensive and remarkable street art scene, including the never ending night life which largely takes shape in hidden bars and darkened rooms city wide, there is no where in the world like Melbourne.
Many cites across the globe have taken many more hundreds of years to develop only half the character that Melbourne possesses, and in keeping with its subtle and un-assuming style, this city does not try to show off, it does not boast a world wide icon in the shape of a bridge, or a building, it does not have a natural centre piece on which a reputation can be built, but what does lie here, what is unmistakable is the soul, the pulse of this city that beats a stylish and funky break, a tune that wields a unrelenting and unimaginable desire. The pulse burnt into the streets has not only shaped and been shaped by the inhabitants of this place.
These walls are marked with the stains of the this cities soul, these people are tainted by the sweat smell of desire, of funk, of all that this cities air eludes too. You will be lost in it’s imagination, in it’s art, feeling and creative angst, you will never forget these days you spend on her streets, in her bars, drinking her juice and tasting her supple vibe.
