Wilu is an original 5-piece band whose members compose and perform an impressive and eclectic range of music. They manage to push the boundaries of musical rhythm, melody and texture while producing compositions with great feel, energy and melody.
Wilu’s style defies categorisation, with evident influences from Jazz, Rock, Latin, Classical, Dance, Indian, Celtic, African, Minimalist and Ambient genres. Musicians and groups which have inspired Wilu include Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Radiohead, Bjork, The Necks, The 12 Tone Diamonds, Chopin, Brahms and Bach. Their strong and diverse compositions produce a range of musical structures, which they further develop during performances with collective improvisations, moving away from the convention of solo improvisations and accompaniment.
Wilu was a recent finalists at the 2008 VCA Jazz Series, adjudicated by Paul Grabowsky at the Paris Cat and Bennett’s Lane, as well as playing a residency at the Australian Open 2008, gracing the corporate stage with their original compositions. Also recently featuring in the Wilu calendar was their March 2008 residency at Bar 303 and club gigs have included The Spot, The Saint, Bar 303, Scarlette Jazz Club, The Paris Cat and Make it up Club (Bar Open).
We have also just finished our debut EP and you can buy that for $5 at gigs or if you message us i might be able to drop one in to you.
