Shannon Barnett completed her Bachelor of Music Performance (Honours) at the VCA in 2005, and has become an in demand trombonist across a variety of genres.

Shannon performs regularly with Melbourne ensembles including The Bamboos, the Bennetts Lane Big Band, Murphy’s Law, Vada and a trio with Allan Browne and Jex Saarelaht, as well as performances with other artists including the Australian Art Orchestra (Mexico Tour 2005), Barney McAll (Australian Tour 2005 and upcoming 2007 tour with Kurt Rosenwinkel), the Black Arm Band ‘Murundak’ (Melbourne International Arts Festival 2006) and the Andrea Keller Quartet (‘Angels and Rascals’ – ABC Jazz, nominated for a 2005 ARIA).

Shannon was named Young Jazz Artist of the Year at the 2007 Bell Awards and her sextet work ‘R/U/L’ earned her the inaugural Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival/APRA Female Composers Award in 2006. She has also been nominated for the Music Council of Australia/Freedman Foundation Jazz Fellowship twice and received grants for composition and international study from the Australia Council for the Arts and the Ian Potter Cultural Trust.
