About Me

ABOUT SOMA CORP: Soma Corp is a multi-tasking creative front specialising in Electronic Music Event Management, Touring, and Graphic Design. In recent times it has cemented itself as the regional booking agency for a small number of respected international artists. The philosophy behind the companys inception is embedded in the innovation and development of a high cultural aesthetic across the fields of design and electronic music. With a dedication to creativity, idealism, integrity, originality, overall quality and artistic sensibility, Soma Corp defies convention to bring Melbourne the forefront of innovative, culturally aware and cutting-edge electronic music entertainment.
Soma Corp events are largely focused on the electronic music output of the signature cities of Detroit USA, Cologne, and Berlin, Germany. The cultural movements and musical developments of these three cities in particular have led to a wave of inspiration, mutual recognition, and reactionary output across the globe and are key players in the progression of the techno music format. Whilst paying strong respects to the broad spectrum of Detroit techno, house and electro as well as the frequently brilliant Cologne and Berlin-bred sounds of shoffel techno, glitch, minimal and microhouse, Soma Corps music policy ultimately steps outside of genre conformities and geographical boundaries and is limited only by a passion for an underlying aural aesthetic quality. Successfully merging the boutique with the underground, art with entertainment, vibe with viability, presence with professionalism; a commitment to quite simply 'getting it right' is of the highest priority.
Sometimes sexy, sometimes serious, sometimes playful, sometimes dark and twisted, the diversity in project output entrusts an intelligent, innovative, slick and street-credible end product higher than the expected industry standard. Jam the system, mess it up and misbehave, push the envelope and step outside the square... welcome to Soma Corp.

Soma Corp presents:
BLOW YOUR OWN WAY Featuring ALEX SMOKE LIVE (Soma / Vakant / Hum+Haw / Glasgow, UK)
Saturday 26th April 2008 Brown Alley - Cnr of Lonsdale St + King St, Melbourne 10pm - 7am

MAIN FLOOR: Alex Smoke LIVE Christian Vance LIVE Mike Callander Dave Pham Dallas Raft Simon Slieker U-One
GARDEN BAR: Virginia Le Lance Harrison Aram Chapers Rollin Connection Matt Digby
Fresh off the back of the epic JORIS VOORN + ARIL BRIKHA LIVE show, Soma Corp proudly presents the highly-anticipated return of one of the most talked about performances of 2007 - minimal / techno genius ALEX SMOKE LIVE! Taking over the entire top level of the Brown Alley complex across two rooms, the newly renovated space features brand new flooring, toilets, DJ booth and stained-glass windows amongst other improvements; and alongside Brown Alley's thundering sound system, a monster local lineup, and front-of-house production involving multiple projection and plasma screens and a 6 hour LIVE visual show from VJ Netzair, it promises to be yet another crazy long weekend event from Soma Corp.
Infusing strongly European-inspired minimal techno and house with melodic Detroit strings, electro, dub, acoustic and even classical elements, Smoke's music is refreshingly original and inspiring. His prolific output possesses a warmth all-too-often lacking in that of his contemporaries, his sound embracing human musicality as much as brittle machine soul. After his highly acclaimed album releases on Soma Records, Incommunicado (2005) and Paradolia (2006), and a string of killer twelve inches on coveted label Vakant from Berlin, Alex has quickly climbed the ranks of the techno elite and is consistently placed in lists alongside the best minimal and techno producers the world over. He also released the mix compilation Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi Vol. 3 (November 2006) on Soma Records, assembling an expansive selection of tracks that perfectly define his influences and style - from unreleased Smoke material to forgotten classics from legendary producers like Basic Channel, Juan Atkins and Robert Hood, to modern electronic pioneers, including Claro Intelecto, Thomas Brinkmann and Troy Pierce. In late 2007 he launched his own label, Hum+Haw, and is steadily building a wealth of quality new productions ranging from abstract minimal techno to experimental glitch and breaks, electronic hip-hop, dub and beyond.
Having remixed the likes of Mylo, Alex Under, Vector Lovers, Steve Reich, Junior Boys, Depeche Mode, Funk D'Void, Slam and Andre Kraml, Alex is in huge demand as a producer, remixer and DJ, even putting together a live mix for the massively popular ‘Essential Mix’ on UK’s BBC Radio One last year. He has already toured the world twice over; playing some of the most highly regarded clubs and Festivals across the UK, Europe, USA, Russia, Japan and beyond. His live sets are the stuff of legend. After a brief appearance at Melbourne’s Red Bull Music Academy in 2006 and a January 2007 Australian / NZ tour with Soma Corp where he was regarded by audiences at sold-out shows in both Melbourne and Sydney as “the best live act of the year”, Soma Corp is proud to again present the full Alex Smoke LIVE experience as part of his 2008 Australian tour. A big welcome back to one of the most brilliant minds in contemporary electronic music.

Heroes:

“Creativity is unusual stuff. It frightens. It deranges. It’s subversive. It mistrusts what it hears. It dares to doubt. It acts, even if it errs. It infiltrates preconceived notions. It rattles established certitudes. It incessantly invents new ways, new vocabularies. It provokes and changes point of view”.

“After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is Music”.
- Aldous Huxley _____________________________
“If one has identified what certain records are saying - something that is of course very subjective, but art IS subjective - how can he or she transmit this message to an audience? Such forces can be activated in almost every individual. If used properly, a mix set can stimulate these forces to an astonishingly high degree.
Regarding (Detroit) Techno as political music, I could identify two main plots within that sound. The first one is all about hope, about the possibility of a positive future. The second one, though, is dreadful and dark, relentlessly identifying the mechanisms of the subtle fascism that we live in, picturing where our carelessness towards our enviroment will lead us, showing the enormous dimensions of social injustice, uncovering how programmer forces control and shape us according to their needs of gaining ever more power.
All of this is highly emotional, passionate and personal. It's not about recruiting masses, it's about making the highest possible number of individuals think, be human and once and for all act as such. Act as human individuals concerned about their own as well as their children's future”.
