About Me

(May 16, 2008 at CFRE 91.9 FM Vibrasonic Experiment)
Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Joanna Borromeo found a deep interest in music at an early age. She began playing the piano at age four, beginning her study of music in the classical genre. Upon completing her 15 years of training as a solo pianist at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Joanna then bid farewell to her hometown at 19 and moved to Toronto, Ontario.
In Toronto, Joanna moved on to studying jazz at Humber College. She has had the pleasure of studying with Brian Dickinson, Dave Restivo, and Don Thompson – three of Canada’s top jazz pianists – and under their guidance, she learned the art of improvising and modern jazz composition.
After graduating from Humber College in 2004, Joanna has since been playing professionally in Toronto, having had opportunities to tour eastern Canada and play in Canada’s most famous and historical venue, Massey Hall.
She currently is involved in several different projects, each of which play all original music. Her main focus is her R&B solo artist project, where she sings, plays keys, and writes all of her music. She is the singer, keyboardist, and songwriter for a newly formed group called Electro Current (a trio that produces house beats using a combination of instruments and laptop computers). Also, she is the keyboardist for three more projects, The Outlanders (an instrumental folk/jazz 4-piece band), Kalabash (an contemporary afro-caribbean jazz 6-piece ensemble) and The Centaurs (a group that improvises electronica and experimental music in a live setting). She also plays synth bass for Robotman (think loud, bumpin' rock.)
Aside from being a part in innovative and creative music projects, she also does freelance work, playing with several of Toronto’s jazz and R&B musicians in the local clubs. In addition to her busy performing schedule, Joanna teaches private piano and vocal lessons to children, youth, and adults who want to learn music for their own personal enjoyment, or aspire to be creative in multiple genres of music. Joanna can lead workshops in: Improvisation in Jazz and Contemporary Music; Singing and Self-Accompaniment on Piano; Piano and Vocal Technique, and; Composition and Songwriting.
