You can see a guy flash his bare back with "free love" painted on it. We have over a billion people now... we clearly didn't need the encouragement. The song is about "toking, smoking and getting high" Weed as it is known in most parts of the world is consumed as a part of some Hindu worship rituals. Although, it was traditionally mashed and mixed in with sweetened milk, during the social revolution of the swingin sixties, more people began to smoke it. "DOM" means breath or to breathe... and here, when the word "maro" (to hit or do)is added, it means to take a drag of something.================================================== ========= This one is a song that I loved to imitate as a little kid. I use to pretend to be this dancer.... but I mostly bumped into things and broke stuff. It's from a movie released in the late 60's. Up until the early part of the last century, single women, usually orphans or widows(and quite often, transvestites), would travel around as nomadic dancers to earn money to survive. They would put on shows in cities, village squares and temples. They mostly entertained during religious celebrations, births and weddings. Sometimes they would dance at social gatherings in private homes. Referred to as "Bhaijis," these women were sometimes attacked at raped by those they entertained. Some dabbled in prostitution which didn't help the reputation of those that didn't. Every town/city has stories of some woman who was dancing at a party for food and money, only to be killed by someone who attacked them. There are two such stories that I know of in my mom's home town. In movies, they were often romanticized and glamorized. The dancer is incorporating Indian Classical Dance gestures and movements along a lot of creativity. In the video, she is telling a story of having lost her earring (jhumka ) in a very flirty way. There is just something about country music that makes people have a bad sense of fashion...... ========================================================= I like this song a lot. I can't really describe why.. but it always puts a smile on my face. The clip is from a movie made just post partition (1947) in the early part of the Indian film industry that later came to be called "Bollywood." It was a time of new freedoms, reclaiming of the Indian identity, peaceful resistance, nation building and national pride. It was the era of Mahatma Ghandi. The settings were often villages and small towns. They were ordinary people who did extraordinary things when faced with incredible struggles. The stories tended to be about the "every day man/woman" reflecting the down to earth ideals of day set in motion by Ghandhi. The other story types of the movies were of the Mughal Emperors, historically based events or religious tales of Hindu dieties. After partition, the swell of national pride and the Indian identity was strongly reflected early Bollywood movies. Every film ended with the national anthem playing and a windblown flag showing on screen. The audience would usually stand up and sing along. The movies made very little distinction between religions and linguistic differences were used for comic relief. The gulf between classes , however, usually showed up as the reason for conflicts .... ----------------------------------------- ============================================================ ====== BIHU Dance. It is a celebration practiced in the Assam state of India. A related Bengali culture, it exists in the northern most part of Bengal region. The rituals, songs and dance are tied into agrarian nature of the culture. The most popular BIHU is the RONGALI BIHU or the Bohag Bihu which refers to the onset of the Assamese New Year (around April 15) and the coming of Spring. This marks the first day of the Hindu solar calendar and is also observed in Bengal, Kerala, Manipur, Nepal, Orissa, Punjab and Tamil Nadu though called by different names. It's a time of merriment and feasting and continues for several days. The farmers prepare the fields for cultivation of paddy and there is a feeling of joy around. The folk songs associated with the Bohag Bihu are called Bihugeets or Bihu songs.This video is an example of Mukoli Bihu where young unmarried men and women attired in traditional golden silk muga dance the bihu and sing bihu songs in the open fields. The songs have themes of romance requited or unrequited. Sometimes the songs describe tragic events too, but treated very lightly...I can understand roughly 80 % of what they are saying.I am usually attracted to the unpolished folk songs and dances that have remained uncorrupted (relatively)by outside influences in most cultures. Here they are singing the praises of an anonymous love referred to as"YOU" (thumee) and how the flowers(phool) are in bloom(phulise), and birds(pokhilah)eat fruit and drop the seed stone bonking the beloved(jah-noh-nee) on the head. The title of the song "Phool Phulise" means "(The)Flowers (have) Bloomed" ============================================================ =====
Movies:
Old Bollywood movie song. It shows the traditional style of mens dress called Dhutti. A shorter length "sari-like" type of fabric that is wrapped around the body and legs producing a loosely fitting trouser. Although most men have adopted western wear (earths new uniform for men), when they dress in traditional clothes for ceremonies and weddings, they will wear a dhutti. In the farm land, men wear something much like the dhutti but shorter in width and lenght so the end result looks like short-pants. This style keeps the garments from being soiled while working in the fields and rice paddys. The kind of boat they are in is typically found in the countryside. It is used to transport people, factory goods, produce, small live-stock and also used for fishing. Sometimes a curved canopy is added with a false floor to turn it into a floating residence. Scenes along the water with boats, such as the one in the video, is a disappearing sight in many parts of India. Most people are rejecting traditions going back thousands of years and reinventing their identities and lifestyles to reflect western ideals. In the video a reluctant voice teacher is correcting a painfully awkward student. As they progress in their lessons, she gets better, their friendship develops and they do stuff like ride around in boats. I really love to read books... just don't have time to do it as much as I would like. I normally tend to gravitate toward nonfiction....... Currently, I'm half way through "Every Body Poops" It's a great read and chock full of golden nuggets of wisdom. ============================================================ = Some of my favorite authors are Richard Rodriguez, Salman Rushdie, Juhmpa Lahiri, Henrik Ibsen, ... damm. I can't recall all of them here. Too many to list. I really wish that I could read my great grandfathers books. He won the national prize for lit which is the equivalent of the American Pulitzer Prize. His books are written in formal Bangla, which is a difficult read for most Bengali people to say the least and nearly impossible for my elementary abilities.
Heroes:
anyone that can tune a guitar... cus I can't...but my actual heros are those that didn't vote for the current president... I love Phyllis Diller,Gracie Allen and Betty White...but none of them have a profiles here. They were pioneers in comedy. Very funny women. Samuel L Clemmons aka Mark Twain... I believe he was the first "stand up comedian" in this country. Incredibly funny and keen observer of his society :) ================================ ========================================================= These people play the guitar almost as well as I do. I actually had been searching for this song for a while.. found it by accident on myspace. It was one of my fav's when I was little. It was mostly "la la la" because she didn't know the real words(she really can't sing either, but we don't tell her that... her ego can't take it)... I still like the song to this day. "Mere Sona" means "My Gold" which translates out to "my dear heart" or "my sweetheart" The song is a plea not to get upset and forgive annoying behavior. ===================================================== Here is a Jazz remix of the same song. It has a strong influence of the "Chutney" music tradition developed in the South Asian Caribbean diaspora. "Chutney" is a fusion of Indian music and dance with the African-Caribbean style. Yep... we Injuns are highly adaptive folks ! ===================================================== I just like this song. It was on an album my aunt Nessa gave me when I was little. The thing about these last two videos is that in the mid part of the last century, men and women were really not allowed to mingle so freely... especially out in the woods alone together. In reality, most people don't frolic in tall grass or through wooded areas. There are huge numbers of slithery poisonous snakes that can pounce on people and park some venom into their bodies. The bitten usually die.... such a baaaaaaaaad idea to prance around in the jungle. ========================================================== Here is a remix of the same video as above made in Britain. The acting and dancing aren't that great. If you avoid looking at the video and ignore the "generic pre-recorded stock backup singing", the song is a nice remix... and they are not prancing in snake infested woods. ======================================================== Although the economic "middle class" and "upper class" is rapidly growing in India, there is still a great deal of poverty that exists in all corners of the country. This video is rather old... from the 70's I think, but it does illustrate the stark contrast between the "haves" and "have not's." Anyone that has been to India will remark about the "beggars" that swarm them as they walk on to the streets. Typically, these are displaced empoverished farmers looking for refuge in the city after a natural catastrophe like monsoons....These are pretty much good natured people that have fallen on hard times. There is a dark side...... Criminal gangs have been known to maim orphan children and send them out begging...People are usually more generous to the handicapped. This sad form of slavery still around in many parts of the country. ==========================================================
