Message from Greg Chaisson: Badlands Killer Bassman is already supporting this site. Here is some of what he had to say..."I mean the thing I like about your site is all the positive stuff...Ray was so much more than people will ever know..great guy, one of the most charming people you could ever meet, great basketball player...loved chess and a big time reader and very funny...when we weren't bitching at each other he used to crack me up...I miss the guy and think of him often". He also had this to say "Anyway, very cool site and the version of Dreams in the Dark - I've never seen that before. Pretty cool, I'm even in it ... which usually isn't the case! It's easy to be overlooked when you're in a band with players as great as Jake and Ray and Eric. For the record let me say Ray was the best singer of his generation and definetly one of the greatest singers of all time".
Right On,Greg!!! What a cool guy!!!!
NOTE TO RAY GILLEN FANS AND ALL INTERNET ROCKERS: You can see that quality input and respect will be generated here....so,don't be strangers.
****Here's a quote about Ray from a few years ago by Jake E. Lee: "Ray had a way of making you feel like there was no place you'd rather be than right where you were. He was very likeable, charismatic, and impossible to stay mad at. He was the ONLY singer I've worked with that would ask for more guitar in the monitors than even I could stand. I think of him often, and miss him deeply. He was, and I'm sure will remain, the best singer I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and easily among the best there ever was."
Here's a wonderfully insightful anecdote from a long time friend(Jane Train Janet)
I'll tell you what lead me to write: I was friends with Ray Gillen of Badlands and I came across this site and I think it's so wonderful.I knew Ray from his rock band Harlotte and he lived 15 minutes from me in New Jersey. Ray did an awesome David Lee Roth in full spandex and jumping around. He was the greatest.
Cool story: One time Ray and I had gone to the Hard Rock Cafe in NYC (once a very cool place for rockers to hang) and we were having dinner. A guy approached the table and asked Ray if he was a singer. (Ray was SO charismatic. He ooozed Rockstar) Ray said that he was a singer. The guy said, "Well Ingwie Malmsteen is upstairs and would like to talk to you. He's looking for a singer." We both went upstairs and Ingwie was there with his chick and some other people and you could tell that he was "holding court" so to speak. He asked Ray if he could sing well. Ray said, "well I'll come audition, you can see. I hold my own." Ray was wonderfully modest. Nice guy. Ingwie said, "Well do you have a demo?" Ray said that he didn't. Ray NEVER had a demo. he even got into Black Sabbath via singing acapella...LOL. Ingwie started to berate Ray saying, "You call yourself a professional and you don't have a demo? What kind of singer doesn't have a demo." Ray said, "Well, I don't. But thanks anyway." And we started to walk away and Ingwie said, "Wait. Come back." Ray said, "No thanks. Take care." And we went back to our table both saying, "Do you believe that asshole?"
Then Ray was in Rondinelli. I drove him a few times to record with this group in Long Island. Then came the Black Sabbath thing, then Jake E. Lee swept him up. I would call Ray's house and he would say, "Hey Janet. Let me call you back. Jake and I are doing some writing." Then off he went. I was busy with my band and I would talk to Ray here and there.I ran into Ray in L.A. in 1992. I noticed his appearance was REALLY strange. Ray was GORGEOUS. Now he looked Alien-like. I didn't even fathom that he was sick.
His hair was shorter and unhealthy. His face was distorted from what I knew. That was the last time I ever saw him. He died the following year.
Because I had run into him around the time that my father passed, my grieving was really caught up in my Dad. I attended Ray's memorial concert in NYC. It was surreal. Although very sad about the news os Ray's passing at the time, I don't think I ever really grieved it until last week. Out of the blue, I started thinking of him. Then I found the tribute page on MySpace. It brought back so many memories and a real sadness.Ray was one of the first people to tell me that I was a good singer. There's a story about it in my bio.Ray touched alot of lives and left behind his music for us all to enjoy.Feel free to share this.Thank you for this site. It's beautiful.
