"...the demons are still there, bigger and badder, because you didn't sing loud enough first time round" - Rob "Edgar" Broughton
"I don't know why they don't just call themselves The Edgar Broughton Band and get it over with" ( Morrissey's reply to the Question - 'What do you think of Radiohead?' for Q's 15th Anniversary questionnaire (Q Magazine, Nov. 2001) REVIEW FROM MARCH 2007 GIG @ COX YARD, STRATFORD
I reckon it's your civic duty to catch the Edgar Broughton Band whenever they play in your area. This Stratford gig was almost a home-turf affair with the band, once the meanest outfit in Warwick, upping their game for a small but devoted crowd. The original power trio of Rob and Steve Broughton plus Arthur Grant are now augmented by Rob’s son Luke ..boards and Dave Cox on second guitar. Arriving in the UK after a stint of gigs in Germany, the band were road-hardened and relaxed, ready to cut loose on a set of songs spanning their entire career.
The Broughtons never quite made the big time in the way that contemporaries such as Pink Floyd and Hawkwind did, but they reek of classic English rock. They are, in short, the genuine article. Rob Broughton has one of those instantly recognisable voices, part Captain Beefheart yet utterly his own. I had forgotten what a superb guitarist he is too; the highlights were when he’d tip his head back and attack the frets with psychedelic abandon. Steve Broughton, the man who played drums on Tubular Bells, is a true powerhouse drummer, beating seven shades of sherbert out of his kit on the more gonzo moments in an awesome show of power which would shame someone a third of his age. Grant remains the steady hand on the rudder, his simple bass runs often providing the riff while Rob heads off to inner space.
The set list was similar to that played at the Robin 2 in Bilston a year ago, but the band sounded more in tune. The sheer joy on young Luke Broughton’s face testified to the fact that this is still a progressive and vital group with stuff to prove.
Highlights included a very topical American Boy Soldier, a funky and rocking Call Me A Liar and Love In The Rain played by the original trio and instantly rewinding 30 years to the days of squats and revolutionary rock. The show finished where it all started for the band with a shamanic Out Demons Out, a collective exorcism of all things ungroovy which is now flecked with techno twitches and the communal singalong, Poppy, one of those acid campfire songs which instantly roll back the years.
