BIO
Marky Ramone - the most visible drummer of the Ramones because of his 15-year involvement.
In 1978, the RAMONES brought drummer Marc Bell on board as Marky Ramone. After recording two hard rock albums with the band Dust (along with guitarist Richie Wise - who would soon go on to produce the first two Kiss albums) when he was 16, Marky got into the punk scene in the early 70's. For a short while he played drums for Wayne County and the BackstreetBoys and then Richard Hell & the Voidoids. In 1978, after two years with the Voidoids, Marky left to find a new band. At this time, Tommy Ramone wanted to quit the band and pursue producing, which was his first love. Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone approached Marky to join The Ramones in 1978. Marky then recorded Road to Ruin, and one year later he co-starred in Rock 'n' Roll High School. His tenure with the Ramones spanned a total of 15 years and 11 albums, including songwriting credits on both Mondo Bizarro and Adios Amigos. In 2000, it was Marky behind the drums for Joey Ramone's posthumous Don't Worry About Me album - a feat followed bittersweetly, with his induction into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame. Along with spoken word tours and production credits, Marky shows no signs of slowing down. Marky is still touring the world and now hosts 'Marky Ramone's Punk Rock Blitzkrieg" on Sirius radio.
A few words from Marky Ramone...
"I started out with my first band, Dust - we recorded 2 albums, and spawned producer guitar player Richie Wise, who produced the first 2 Kiss albums, and Kenny Aaronson on bass who played with Joan Jett and Billy Idol. After the band called it quits (due to the fact we were still in high school,) I recorded an album with Andrew Oldham (the Rolling Stones' first producer) on Columbia records, than was asked to audition for the New York Dolls. From there, joined Jayne County's band, than was asked to join Richard Hell and the Voidoids, and recorded the punk anthem and album The Blank Generation. I was then asked to join the Ramones in 1978, and from there starred in the movie Rock n' Roll High School. Recorded 10 studio albums with the Ramones and was with the band for 14 years altogether. Also proud to have played on Joey Ramone's solo record.
The most noted albums I'm on with the Ramones are Road To Ruin (featuring "I Wanna Be Sedated"), End Of The Century (produced by Phil Spector - with "Rock And Roll Radio"), the soundtrack to Rock n' Roll High School, songs like "The KKK Took My Baby Away," and of course the song from the hit movie Pet Cemetary. I'm a lifetime achievement award winner from MTV and a Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer! My fingerprints are also on the Hollywood rock walk. I tour the world with my spoken word multimedia extravaganza, and play with several different people.
I was the executive producer of "RAMONES RAW", the definitive Ramones DVD which was produced and directed by John Cafiero (Osaka Popstar). Released on Sept. 14th 2004, "Ramones Raw" has the honor of achieving THE RAMONES highest Billboard chart position ever in the course of our historic career. Ramones Raw was awarded GOLD CERTIFICATION by the RIAA shortly after it's Billboard debut at number 5 and three consecutive weeks on Billboards Top 40. "RAMONES RAW" was also awarded for "Best Special Features/Bonus Materials" in the First-Ever MUSIC DVD AWARDS.
Most recently, I play drums on the CD OSAKA POPSTAR & THE AMERICAN LEGENDS OF PUNK
that will be released worldwide on May 23rd, 2006.
Don't miss my radio show "MARKY RAMONE'S PUNK ROCK BLITZKRIEG" on SIRIUS SATELITE RADIO, (The Punk Channel 29) for all the best in punk rock old and new!"
