About Me

The San Francisco Film Society is changing the course of film exhibition in the Bay Area. But that's a little stuffy. Really what we're all about is film and going to the movies and watching and showing really great independent, foreign, short, experimental film. And documentaries. And anything else that's interesting that is an image that moves. We're best known for presenting the San Francisco International Film Festival, which just celebrated its 50th Anniversary, which for 15 days each year showcases the best in world cinema. No joke. But we also present the San Francisco International Animation Festival in October and New Italian Cinema in November. And that doesn't even cover the slate of programming under our SF360 banner. But basically, if you like going to the movies and you like interesting movies, you should check us out. Visit our site and sign up for the eNewsletter .
what is SF360 anyway?

My Interests

International film, documentary film, independent film, animated film, family film, educational film, scary film, funny film, new film, old film, spirited film, wacky film, serious film, provactive film, your film -- film that changes the way we think about film.

I'd like to meet:

Well, you. And anyone and everyone in the Bay Area and beyond who loves going to the movies. Or maybe you would prefer to watch movies in your home, or on your computer, or, dare I say, on your ipod. If you live for the movies, or even if you just like the occassional movie, we'd like to know you. If you want to stay in touch with me, the best way is to sign up for our e-newsletter .
Do these names mean anything to you? Daniel Wu, Jonathan Richman, Parker Posey, Hal Hartley, Heddy Honigmann, George Lucas, John Lasseter, Walter Murch, Les Blank, Rob Nilsson, Peter Morgan, Peter Sellars, Kevin Brownlow, Werner Herzog, Guy Maddin, Tilda Swinton, John Turturro, Ed Harris, Deerhoof, Andy Lau, Virginia Madsen, Lily Tomlin? Well they were at the last two San Francisco International Film Festivals . And those are only a handful of the guests in those years. Spread the word.

Music:

Soundtracks. And music in film. At the 50th, we showed ONCE, which had music by Glen Hansard of the Frames; we had Jonathan Richman here, guys from Xiu Xiu and Jet Black Crayon; we had Guy Maddin and a twelve-piece orchestra complete with a castrato performing Brand upon the Brain!; and more. We presented the film Romance & Cigarettes at the International 49, and that had one killer soundtrack. Also, Perhaps Love, Brothers of the Head, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, A Prairie Home Companion, Backstage and The Wayward Cloud were all movies with pretty awesome music at our last Festival. Over the years, we've had the following performers play or shown films about: Yo La Tengo, RZA, Deerhoof, American Music Club, Addictive TV, Tom Waits, Talking Heads, Alloy Orchestra and more.

Movies:

There are way too many to list. Visit www.sffs.org and check out what's happening around here. Click on the link for the Levin Archive to search Festivals past.
