American Music with Roots

About Me

I guess that you could say that I am pretty passionate about roots music. It all started as a kid, listening to my grandfather pickin' and singin' "Wildwood Flower" and “Little Brown Jug” . I’ve been hooked since.
I currently co-host Barren River Breakdown from deep in the hills of ol' Kentucky (actually it's broadcast from the hill of Western Kentucky University on Western’s Public Radio). The show, which airs on Saturday’s (part of the year) and Sunday’s at 12 noon (central time), is hosted by Erika Brady or myself. Every week we produce a two hour show exploring American Music with Roots that honors the past while introducing fresh new talent to our listeners. At BRB we don't only give airplay to the latest new releases from Rounder and Sugarhill, but we also spotlight independent Alternative & Vintage Country, some Folk, a little Blues, and of course we play plenty of Old-Time, Stringband and Bluegrass. From time to time we add Americana spices such as Zydeco, Rockabilly and Roots Rock to the mix.
I post most of my playlists in the blog area of this page. We also plug upcoming shows, so if you'll be playing in this area let us know and we'll try to announce the event for you (send concert announcements to [email protected]).
ARTIST NOTE: As a way to say thank you to all of the wonderful artists on myspace, I also keep a blog of places to play in our neck of the woods. So if you’re planning a road trip, a couple of these venues may be an option.
LISTENER NOTE: In the blog area of this page, I keep a fairly updated listing of upcoming roots music shows and concerts (with information contact numbers).
If you have an opportunity, go to www.wkyufm.org and give us a listen [if passing through Kentucky, tune in on the radio at: 88.9 FM (Bowling Green, KY), 89.5 FM (Owensboro, KY), 89.7 FM (Somerset, KY), or 90.9 FM (Elizabethtown, KY)].
If you want to send us some music for airplay consideration, send to: Attn: Mark Hayes, Barren River Breakdown, Western's Public Radio, Western Kentucky University, 1906 College Heights Blvd #11035, Bowling Green, KY 42101-1035.
I’m connecting my-space to your-space to accomplish the following: 1) Find new music to play on the show, 2) Have an avenue where bands can find me, 3) Host a space where fans of the show can discover new bands, sample their music, see where they are playing and find out how to purchase their recordings.
Happy Trails,
Mark..........
