About Me

Carla Gover plays clawhammer banjo, guitar & piano, writes songs, clogs, and is an aspiring Appalachian Diva. She is from the Eastern Kentucky coal town of Whitesburg, Kentucky, where she grew up idolizing her grandmother, Emmylou Harris, and Loretta Lynn. She has never had a "legit" job, having roamed the country playing music and dancing since graduating from The University of Kentucky in 1995 with a degree in Appalachian Studies. Currently, she is performing as a solo artist and with Kentucky's newest roots-based band, Wicked Polly. She is a winner of the Kerrville New Folk Contest for 2007 and the Flatrock Music Festival Song Contest 2007. She just completed a traditional music fellowship in the Special Collections of Berea College, and is currently writing songs on commission. In her spare time, she likes to drink coffee, read Douglas Adams and Robert Heinlein, dance, play Bach on the piano, listen to scratchy old field recordings, study evolutionary biology, raise a garden, and kiss.Current favorite quote: "Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time." T.S. EliotQuestions childlike in their tone are forming on my tongue. I stand with you beside the road, the restless and the young. Coyote phrases sliding from the corners of your mouth. I blow around from north to east but you're always in the south. Jack of Fools, poets' muse, you speak in rhymes and riddles. You wrap me up in highs and lows; you're never in the middle...Hell or Highwater August 2006
