Diatta, the "lion", features the original music of Mamadou "Vieux" Diaite. He was born into a famous Mandinko musical family, from the Cassamance region of Senegal, West Africa. Mamadou’s father, Abdoulkunta Diaite and Ibou Diaite, Bele Diaite and Pece Djmy Diaite were the founding members of the UCAS Band of Sedhiou in 1959, one of the pioneers of the Afro- Manding sound. "Vieux" is a gifted song writer, singer and guitarist, and his music is a fusion of Mbalax, Afro-Manding and World Beat.Mamadou played and toured with many bands in Senegal, playing rhythm guitar and bass with such groups as Le Ninki Nanka, Djby Wade, Yela Diop, Super N'galou, M'balax System, Ali Boulo Santo and Fakoli. He also lived and studied music with the Cissoko Family, where he played in their Dance and Drum Company. He currently lives in the Hudson Valley, New York, where he plays with his band Diatta.
