Mahanta Faye is a drummer from Dakar, Senegal. He was born into a family of musicians, including Adama Faye, Habib Faye, (bassist for Youssou N'dour), Vieux Mac Faye (jazzman of Dakar) and Lamine Faye, guitarist, arranger and band leader. Lamine is known for the creation of a new style called Marimbalax. Mahanta was the drummer for Lamine's band Lemzo Diamono, a highly popular group. He played for two years in the Nationale Orchestre. He has recorded with many great Senegalese artists such as Souleymane Faye, Moussa Ngom, Alioune Mbaye Nder, Fallou Dieng, Assan Mboup, Alioune Guisse, Mapenda Seck, Ablaye Mbaye, Maiga, etc. He has also performed with Ndongo Lo, Titi, Ndeye Kasse, Mass Ndiaye, Mbarxame Ciss, and played in Chicago with Abdoulaye Diabate from Mali, as well as others. Mahanta is known for his driving, complex rhythms in the African mbalax style. He loves to play other music as well, such as jazz, Brazilian, Hip Hop and rock. Now in America, he's looking for the right band!
