my name is Rowan and I am a member of Enemy3. It’s very hard to explain exactly what Enemy3 is and how it came to make sense or maybe not make sense at all. Basically our story started out in a small town called Springs in a small country called South Africa when we were all in high school. None of us started playing musical instruments and dancing around like sea monkeys to be cool or be in the “in group†and contrary to any belief or what that metal head kid told me last night, it had an adverse effect on our popularity. We would meet early at each others houses and set up our cheap and old equipment, and then torture the neighbors for an entire day. Punk was our first love. We didn’t care how we sounded, if we were making any musical errors, if we were singing in the right key or if we were on time with each other. We were friends trying something out that for us was a whole new frontier. We don’t consider ourselves as a new band because we were always apart of the South African alternative scene even though we weren’t on stage ever. We were there when Durango 95 came to our small district, we were there when shows only cost R10, when hardcore was just a guy screaming to a drop D tuned guitar and a over passionate 16 year old drummer, when the scene was way to small for bands to be paid, when there were only three styles of music: punk, metal and ska, when an audience of 40 was considered massive, when flyers were black and white and impossible to read, when Gotham City Hardcore band Most Precious Blood’s vocalist Rob Fusco slapped a fellow Boksburger at their show, when every second person was starting or had started a zine, when we hated ignorance and not jocks, and when the word “jock†was just something in American Teen movies. No, we don’t wish that things were like that again. You see, Enemy3 has always been apart of this growing scene and will always be growing with it, and where ever it goes, I guess we will be going with it. All of us learned to be musicians by being in Enemy3. I don’t know what it is like to be on stage or in studio without Roy behind me and Gareth next to me, and I don’t think I want to know. We have been called “the three piece punk band from Springs that aren’t really punk but maybe more emo and screamo…or even metal rock and roll†and even just “funny guys with a brilliant stage presenceâ€, neither the less it seems that labeling or defining Enemy3 is beyond any of our capacities. I can hardly think of any word that could express my feelings for and about Enemy3 and my experiences with it. All I can say is come to an Enemy3 show and experience it for your self. I could try impressing you by listing what equipment we using, telling you what venues we have played at all around South Africa, what brilliant taste we have in music, how knowledgeably we are with music theory, what musicians and producers we have worked with…but I don’t think that’s what makes our band. Enemy3 is Gareth Fourie, Roy Kemm, and Rowan Foster–Sutherland and anything else is not worth mentioning.
