Cleve Douglass

Cleve Douglass Now in New York City

About Me

After a decade and a half of tours in Japan, Cleve is returning officially to the New York night club scene, but he is not doing it alone..he has a little help from his friends this Summer. Cleve will be a part of the new Summer Jazz Series at Mannahatta Lounge on the Bowery in New York's downtown area located directly across the street from what was the old CBGB's of the East Village. The series is being curated by Mark Payne, who has totally revamped the music scene at this venue and he has musicians and audiences literally applauding him for his efforts in bringing in the very best musicians and singers that New York has to offer. Cleve will also be playing two consecutive Wednesday nights in August at The Metropolitan Room located in New York's Chelsea area (location of the old Gotham Theatre). Wednesday August 22nd and Wednesday August 29th will be the dates when Cleve presents 'Cleve & Friends' Parts 1 & 2 respectively. Cleve's list of 'Friends' will be announced later this week by bulletin and by special newsletter.Mercer Ellington used to introduce Cleve to a Lincoln Center Audience as "...the premiere vocal interpreter of Duke Ellington music."
Cadence Magazine wrote "...he swings, he scats, he cajoles with musical genius and ease"... "He is one of the best male jazz singers on the scene today!"
Cleve's vocal maturity, wide range, and fearless improvisational skills combine to give him control, balance, rhythm and smooth tonal qualities that allows him to sing in any given genre. Many liken his voice to the late Nat "King" Cole, others say he reminds them of other well-known singers, but another New York columnist stated that "he has the kind of voice that can drive a reviewer nuts trying to label it." But in fact his voice is unlike that of any other singer, whether past or present...it's all his own.
A Brief History
(Full bio can be viewed at Official Website: www.clevedouglass.com)
Tennessee Native:
Born in Nashville "Music City, USA", his mother was Marie Brown, then well-known for the unique position as one of a handful of professional female drummers. His mom continued playing the drums right up to the time of Cleve's birth. It has been shown that rhythm is the very first thing developed in childhood and we are sure now that Cleve undoubtedly got a head start.
Training, Background, Styles:
Cleve's earliest training began with intense study of classical vocal technique which bridged into musical theatre then later to jazz and improvisational ("scat") singing. Cleve sings in all genres including jazz, r&b, lounge, nu-jazz, gospel, Motown, country, Latin, Afro, classical and multi-cultural styles. His recordings include the styles of bossa nova, swing, Afro-Cuban, electronic and jazz standards.
Recent Tours /
Recordings in Japan / Blue Note
For the past decade, Cleve has been regularly touring and recording in Japan. He is about to begin his thirtieth tour there later this year working with some of that country's finest jazz musicians. His work in Japan has also included tours with African percussionists from Senegal with Cleve as the only "melodic" instrument in the mix. Cleve was featured in a Japanese television documentary and has appeared on NHK television as well.
He has performed two full month-long contracts with the Blue Note in Fukuoka, Japan. Last year he released his third Japan cd entitled "Coffee Time Jazz" with Fiji Islander Michelle Rounds ( http://www.myspace.com/michellerounds" ). This recording of duets pairs the skills of these two dynamic vocal stylists who together sing as if of one mind, one intention... improvising with rhythms, and melodies and innovative arrangements of some familiar tunes but with a fresh new feel of today.
NBC TODAY SHOW
Cleve appeared recently on Weekend Edition of the NBC Today Show with the show's co-host Lester Holt joining him on bass, Tony Romano on guitar and Ken Yamaguchi, percussion. Calls and emails flooded NBC studios following Cleve's appearance on the show.
You Stepped Out of A Dream

My Father's Island

Duke Ellington Birthday Tribute, Chicago, Il
On April 29th, Cleve will headline (second year in a row) the 33rd Annual Duke Ellington Tribute sponsored by Chicago's Jazz Unites, Inc. Last year's event was so successful with Cleve introducing new arrangements of Duke's tunes done by his musical director/guitarist/friend Tony Romano that Jazz Unites has invited Cleve back to celebrate this year on the actual birth date of Duke Ellington.

Duke Ellington Boulevard

Producer: Seth Goldman
Engineer: David Lawson

Making a debut album a tribute to Duke Ellington can be quite a challenge. There's certainly a large selection of songs to pick from as Duke was a prolific songwriter. There's a wealth of the Duke's own recorded material out there, as well, to be compared with. What Cleve Douglass has going for himself is talent and a very good understanding of Ellington's music. On this recording there are even three tunes that the Duke never got to record himself - songs that were being worked on when he died in 1974. That wouldn't matter if Douglass were a lesser singer. However, Douglass more than does these tunes justice. In his liner notes, Jed Distler suggests that, based on singers past, Ellington "would have been attracted to Cleve Douglass' artistry and gone on to work with him, just as his son Mercer Ellington has in recent years." After hearing Duke Ellington Boulevard , I'm inclined to agree with that. The Goldman Media Group, phone: 845-754-8237 or mail to: 8 Canal Drive, Godeffroy, NY 12729. Rating : ****

Jan Leder Nonchalant:

Absolutely everyone on this CD is excellent, and vocalists Angela DeNiro, Mary Foster-Conklin and Cleve Douglass: all deliver great performances....-- relaxed and tasteful...featuring a varied play list comprised mostly of Leder originals... The cleverly worded 'Inbetween the Streets' features a Latin beat behind Cleve Douglass': vocal. In addition to the vocal contributions .. and the Nat King Cole-like voice of Cleve Douglass: , the combined rhythm of Jon Davis, Art Lillard, and Sean Smith keeps a steady, strong beat. There is nothing heavy on this album, which makes it a fun time for the performers and the listeners."

Sounds Like: There is always the comparison that people like to make when trying to place my sound into their ‘filing system’ for easy labeling. People like to compare my voice to one very well-known singer, or another; but I know that I do not sound like anyone else that I have heard.

I actually believe that each and every singer’s voice is totally unique because vocal sound is very much dependant upon distinct physical features that give a certain sound to the voice.

Trying to find a comparison is a big waste of time and in doing so, one misses out on appreciation of the unique vocal qualities of the individual. Sometimes it is best to celebrate our differences rather than trying to find comparisons.

…as one critic wrote, ’just listen for yourself’.
