Genocide is a complex and often divisive issue. A week of events March 12-18, 2006, was our way of opening a community, grassroots dialogue in progress. This is our response to silence. Dissatisfied with media coverage of, and forums to learn about, issues surrounding genocide, a group of high school and college students, retirees, individuals, and organizations came together.
The result was an historical vision: a week of diverse events designed to examine genocide: the past, present and prevention; the atrocities, harms and hurts; and the overcoming, healing and hope.
All events were free and open to the public, were in several locations to include more communities, used a variety of medium to speak to more individuals, and always had an open invitation for anyone to participate. We wanted to reach beyond political, religious, racial, and geographical lines.
This was the Portland area's first event of its kind. It was an entirely grassroots effort. It was a way of saying these issues are important to us as community members, and they are more than just international concerns--they impact our country, our city, our community, and us as individuals.
The momentum from Genocide Awareness Week has continued to grow and encourage a more widespread commitment to raise awareness on these issues. Now, the Coalition for Genocide Awareness works as a network, as a community, as a coalition, to continue the work.
This is our response to the downplay of the atrocities of genocide for far too long. This is our way of saying, 'we will not sit idly by and watch our brothers and sisters be murdered.' This is a response to hearing 'no' from the media too many times, a response to hearing newsworthy stories should be local.
Now, the issues of genocide are as local as you can get!
