estimated 400,000 people, and more than 2.5 million are
displaced and in grave danger of more violence and starvation.
The international community has failed again to protect
a population that has been targeted for genocide,
and the responsibility falls on all of us to act
and not remain silent.
The crisis in Darfur was made known to the world in
February 2003. Since then, little has been done to stop
the genocidal actions of the Sudanese government
on its people. In recent months, weak peace
agreements and deficient policy has been put forth
by international officials, but the progress is
unacceptably slow. The fact of the matter is that
in light of many other world crises that occupy
the news media, the people of Darfur have been forgotten.
Its time to forget about our politics, economics,
and our futile bureaucracy. This
is a bi-partisan issue. This is a human issue.
It's time to remember the people of Darfur.
The Las Vegas community will be uniting on the evening of the day of September 30, 2006 to genuinely show not only the people of Darfur but also every person of the world that justice is possible if only wed care enough. This inhumane cruelty, this widespread starvation, this genocide is happening in Africa. What would we have done differently if it happened somewhere else?
