The Cripplers

Midwestern-fried Punk & Soul

About Me

The CRIPPLERS are a garage punk/rock 'n' roll band from the pleasent, peaceful streets of St. Louis, Missouri. Originally from BoCoMo (for you tourists, that would be Columbia, Mo.), The CRIPPLERS formed in the early fall of 1996. A three piece at the time, they included: JT (vocals & guitar), Tim Hopmeier (vocals & bass guitar), and Dave Devine (drums). Blending old blues, country & garage punk with a lot of midwest muscle, they started getting recognition around the midwest, playing benefits, radio shows & the like. The CRIPPLERS have become a permanent fixture in the river city, headlining for a slew of great local acts as well as the regional and national circuit. The CRIPPLERS still pound out R&R the way it was intended... fun, snotty, short & sweet. Concentrating mostly on originals, covers are thrown around. Best known for their live, raw energy & duel lead vocals, your senses are left drained, blasted & wanting more. VIVA LOS CRIPPLERS!!!

Self-proclaimed drunk-rock stylists the Cripplers clearly know what to do with a snootful--it seems to breed a glorious mix of slop & slam that rates them as one of the most genuinely monstrous bands anywhere. The Columbia, Missouri trio's thundering, distorted blast of punk-garage chaos, as captured on last year's ONE MORE FOR THE BAD GUYS, has such psychopathic heart & wrecking-crew authority that it's enough to bring a tear to the eye of lowborn rockers everywhere. In an age where the matching-wardrobe Euro-jive Hives are heralded as some sort of legitimate breakthrough in comtemporary rock, these brawling Midwesterners reduce the marketing lie & scripted patter of such gimmick-mongering monkeys to utter inconsequence. The Cripplers, grubby, dipsomaniacal bashers all, represent America at its best--out of control, hard-hitting, just-for-hell-of-it musical revolutionaries. Pledge allegiance, gimp!

Sufferin' snakebites! Garage rock at its utter rawest, fastest, and dirtiest. So sleazy and lowdown in fact, you might wanna call it punk rock. Missouri's Cripplers just bleed of punk energy and ferocity, and are guaranteed to leave impact marks on many unsuspecting skulls. `One More For The Bad Guys' blurts out 16 tracks including covers of Shane MacGowan's `Church Of The Holy Spook', and `Joey' by Bob Dylan. The aftermath of a played-through Cripplers record is one similar to what would go down if the Pagans, the Sonics and the Heartbreakers were somehow stitched together and reanimated.

The Cripplers - One More For The Bad Guys CD (Dionysus)
Rocking good country-junkie punk from Columbia, MO. Though not as heroin addled as most of their brethren, these fellas have shot up enough Heartbreakers to preserve Johnny Thunders for a few more years. Yet Missouri does not live by smack alone--the Cripplers spend just as much time cranked up on DMZ and occasionally dosing on SoCal superheroes Tex & the Horseheads and the Flesheaters. The music sounds like it somehow breaks the speed limit heading to gigs in a disintegrating 40-year-old Ford. Serious whiplash warning.

Rock 'n' roll sighting: Hard-working,hard-driving rock 'n' roll without any reservations or pretentions--call it "garage" if you must, but what it really is is straight-ahead madness right from the heartland. The Cripplers hail from absolute dead middle of America in Columbia, Missouri, and their merger of the usual suspects (Groovies, Dolls, Link Wray, Jon Spencer, Cynics, Lazy Cowgirls & Real Kids) is about a tasty a treat as anyone who loves the primal scream could enjoy. Best of all, they're showcased at Atwater Village's greatest watering hole, the Bigfoot Lodge, a club that's straight out of a David Lynch wet dream in its faux ski/hunter's lodge decor. With the best of the neo-garage movement spun before & after the Cripplers set, a low cover & cheap drinks, what else could anyone who likes their cochlea blown to bits want?
